THE DAVID JAMES BIO:
What can be said about country singer/songwriter David James? Well, that’s what a lot of people are saying until they hear this gifted man open his mouth and begin to sing. Once they hear his unique vocal styling, they always want more.
Born on January 17, 1962 in Austin, Texas, David was singing at an early age. He began singing in his fathers Pentecostal Holiness Church at the age of 5. David relates the story that his first public appearance was also his first paid appearance. “ My dad wanted me to sing one Sunday morning before he preached. I told him I was too afraid to sing in front of the church and he gave me fifty cents to sing “Jesus Loves Me.†The congregation loved it and me, I was hooked.â€
Over the next four decades David would leave his mark on music in a subtle way that few could deny was wonderful. As a teenager he won talent contests all over the Austin area. When David was a freshman at Manor High School, he and some friends put together a small band to compete in the FFA talent competition. A week before the contest, there was a fight between the members and it disbanded. David, not wanting to accept defeat, competed as a solo. He tied with a 6-piece band from rival Elgin High School and then lost to them in the runoff by less than 5 votes.
The following year, David competed again and once again tied with the same rival band only this time, in the runoff, David won the contest with his rendition of Ronny Milsap’s monster hit, “It Was Almost Like A Song.†The standing ovation David received lasted nearly five minutes. David lost to another single in the next level of competition. The young singer/songwriter was from Houston and his name was Clint Black. Years later David would say that if he had to loose, losing to Clint Black wasn’t all that bad.
As a young adult David toured the southern United States with his band “The Texas Gentlemen†playing in nightclubs and doing private parties. David had a huge fan base on the internet scoring a number one hit on the popular MP3.com website with his song “Lifetime of Loveâ€.
In 2001 David was honored by the Lone Sate Music Association when his song, “With Him†was named Country Song of The Year and David was named the male “Rising Starâ€. At the awards ceremony, held at the world famous Billy Bob’s Texas, David was nearly in tears as he accepted his awards from the association. David was honored when he was asked to sing his song at that show not even knowing that he had been nominated until he arrived for the show performance.
In 2002, David was once again honored when his signature song, “Texasâ€, was named the associations Song of The Year. David received a standing ovation as he walked across the stage to accept this award and later sang the song to a nearly sold out audience.
In 2002, David’s talent came to the attention of Wildoats Record’s president Steve Haggard in Nashville. David was asked to be apart of that labels first major New Artist release. David, along with two other unknown artists, would be featured on Wildoats Records first New Talent compilation CD entitled, “Tomorrow The World.†David was the featured new artist and the release garnered very strong reviews from the underground press in Nashville and around the world.
Featured on the Wildoats Records website, David’s entry on that website reads, “Singer/Songwriter David James hails from Texas, where he has built a loyal fan following and reputation as an exciting performer. As soon as we heard David’s voice and songs, we wanted him to be part of our “New Artist Seriesâ€, and his four selections on Tomorrow The World demonstrate why. He is an impressive talent whose music is rooted in Texas-style country, but has wide appeal. His original song “Texas†won “Song of The Year†honors from the Lone Star Music Association, and David earned a standing ovation when he performed the winner before an audience of 2500 at the organization’s awards ceremony at Billy Bob’s Texas in Fort Worth.â€
In November 2002, after a successful tour with his renamed band, “Tejasâ€, David fell ill with colon problems and underwent emergency surgery. Doctors removed half of David’s colon, several feet of intestine and David spent the rest of 2002 in and out of the hospital. Because of David’s illness, David made the painful decision to retire from the road and to concentrate on his writing. Since 2002, David has restricted his music to a limited number of songwriter showcases and appearing as a guest with fellow performers in and around the Dallas/Ft. Worth area.
David has come out of retirement now and will be performing regionally around the Granbury area. He's already gaining a fan following and is looking forward to performing all around the area.
