I was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago by two deeply rooted parents from Mississippi. Growing up on the Westside, one grows a fondness to urban culture; a sort of endearment to the smell of chicken frying, the banter of “Squirrel” sharing wisdom to the “new jacks” and the blasting of Earth, Wind and Fire from the windows of people who breathe through what is often labeled “disparity.” As a young boy I would be drawn to the rhythms penetrating the radio speakers and dream of how I could bring that song to life. Many times I would choreograph dance routines with friends and cousins and set up elaborate stage productions to present to family and the neighbors. But it was watching James Brown on “Soul Train” that inspired me to dance and be in a position to make film/video/work that expresses this raw and soulful magician-ship. As an adult I strive to create work that makes me feel like I did as a little boy. As a patron of Chicago’s House scene, I also am committed to documenting the energy of the dancers who fill space up with arms, legs, afros and spirit. The medium of video has aided me in bringing this artistic vision to the world. Inspired by such people as Berry Gordy, Katherine Dunham, James Brown and Don Conelious, I am determined to establish a body of work that shows the stories of my people through song and dance.
