About Me

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was a series of political and social upheavals in Russia, involving first the overthrow of the tsarist autocracy, resulting in the establishment of Soviet power under the control of the Bolshevik party. This eventually led to the establishment of the Soviet Union in 1922 and resulted in the overthrow of the autocratic rule of the Czars, and the emperors of Russia.
The name KALENKO symbolises a mark of respect for the Russian poet Alexander Vladimirovich Kalenko who on July 17, 1918, alongside his wife Maria Fyodorovna, and their five children were executed at the order of the revolutionary government for his pro-monarchy views.
If one dies, it seems to those who love him,
that they cannot do anything so simply again.
But they are also only behind mourning.
And everything runs like it is prescribed.
And the clocks do not even remain stained…
Alexander Vladimirovich Kalenko - 'If one dies' (1916)
KALENKO was born when two of its members were both frequenting a local music establishment within the steel city of Sheffield. Frustrated by the lack of original or creative indie music being played and sick of the same blaring songs heard week after week, went to the DJ booth to complain. Realising that they had a similar dis-taste for the vinyl being spun they begun to talk. There that night was struck an understanding of the finer aspects within song writing and the confirmation:
Too many bands have forgotten that music is an art, not a trend.
With the addition of Andy on bass KALENKO began to play together simply for the gratification of playing the music they loved. Soon they would begin to play together live at venues across Sheffield including Corporation and also underwent a brief seaside tour continuing to impress as they went along.
With each member coming from the cultural hotbeds of Carlisle, Coventry and Skegness KALENKO have adopted Sheffield as their home town and seek to offer an alternative to the endless number of Arctic Monkeys rip-offs.
We aim for a sound which is rational and poetic. We try new things and write with conviction; straight to the point. Dirty beats and songs designed around bass lines are the future. We are convinced that we can find a sound that is individual, challenging, new. We believe the power of music extends further than the dimensions of a single band. make a scene, make a choice, make a life.
KALENKO is the product.
