Sounds Like: In this dirty grey city with a serious chip on its slouching shoulders, something is stirring. Never entirely comfortable with its geographical position sandwiched between Bristol and Cardiff, Newport has always had a mindset of all its own. Not quite in tune with the Tom Jones and Max Boyce brand of Welshness, and certainly not English, there's a cynicism and a lack of pretension - a realness, if you like - in the place's character that is impossible to manufacture. A decade ago, in the shape of 60ft Dolls, Dub War, Flyscreen and Novocaine, Newport was blessed with a quartet of formidable bands that inspired some bright spark to start calling the place 'The New Seattle'. Despite having little in common with the old Seattle other than loud guitars and a dirty river, it's fair to say that for the first time since then, there are a handful of really good Newport bands again. And a new label that is going to kick your door down and make you listen to them.From July 2007 onwards, Zoopaart Records will be releasing monthly singles from a roster of bands that all have their own sound and identity, but are united by a common love of dirty rock'n'roll music, sweat-drenched live shows and late, late nights.
