Artist Statement~ For the past few years, I have been working on figure and large, scale abstract art. The majority of my work deals with form and space, which best portrays my personal expression as an artist. I am drawn towards form and space for there is no hidden meaning that the viewer may linger on. I also tend to forgo topics, which I also believe diverts the viewer from my art. Questions that I may ask myself when working on a piece are. How will my work interact with space and those around it? Would the viewer want to touch it, do I want them to touch it? Does the material work in it’s surroundings? Viewers find my work to have a cohesive strength that demonstrates a majestic flow. Which is a testimony to the many qualities of metal that I use in my work. I feel this is my greatest skill. To take a ridged material and shape it to my will is a magical process. I have many people ask “what is this made of?” They are amazed that metal can be shaped in this manner. Where do I obtain my ideas? Well I have no real influence on my work, but if I had to guess it would be nature. With the endless forms of nature, I study it constantly for new ideas. Many of my pieces have find their way in to lawn and gardens. I feel this the best venue that demonstrates my ability to incorporate my work in it’s surroundings. Such pieces as “hidden peril”, “Rings of Tal’Ras” and “Spiral” demonstrates a splendid grace and flow that captivates the viewer. Thank you for your time and I hope you enjoy my work. Shawn Farester
