Anyone of interest really, band geeks, artists, creative types.... Nerds. It’s sometimes hard to gauge who you really would like to meet.Local bands add the Lifeforms
I have some thought about music. It’s an art form I respect a lot especially
in a live situation. It’s a strange sort of expression, the transmissions of
energy from one living being to another to cause a sensation to affect what
emotions and thoughts you have. The best part is that the triggers to sensations
are different from person to person, as our brains associate sounds with periods
in our lives or experiences.
I was born in Memphis Tenn. Circa the latter part of the 20th century, strangely
enough I never really developed an accent as my mom was from California and my
father an immigrant from Colombia. My musical tastes came as most kids tastes
come from, spending a lot of time with my parent's libraries of vinyl. Bands I
liked to sit around on a Saturday afternoon listing to between the screaming at
the TV when Junk Yard Dog battled George the animal steel; were The Jim Carol
Band, Rolling Stones, The Doors, The Mamma and the Pappas, Iggy Pop and the
Stooges, and of course in inescapable Beatles.
As with all thing in the 80's came a depression, unfortunate MTV marked the end
of talent based music and more the beginning of the vaudevillian bullshit we
call the music industry today. I still cringe every time I hear "we built this
city", "take on me" or "material girl", and hair rock cheese ball but-bands make
me violent and mentally unstable. The glimmers of music light I found at this
point in my life were Oingo Bonigo, Nizerreb, Ministry, Soiuxie and the
Banshees, The Black Sheet, Tribe Called Quest, The Jungle Brothers and Lots of
Techno.
Though I can't say I didn't enjoy my childhood my adolescence years had a much
better soundtrack. I discovered the grunge while rediscovering Pink Floyd,
Cream, Black Sabbath, and many other classics that escaped my parents scope when
I was younger. I was enthralled by two opposites at the time the hip-hop scene
and the Punk Scene. I had a decent and equally diverse collection of Slick Rick,
NWA, and Sir Mix a lot mixed with Fugazi, The Dead Kennedy's and countless
unnamed screaming guys.
It was not until I moved into this hippy drug house that I discovered that I
liked playing music. Mostly because I didn't have an instrument nor did I know
that many people who owned any equipment. Guess that's why I was making my sad
attempts at that time to Rap... Oh thinking back on that BS man was I a dufus.
"I am the one who flows as the one whose knows as, Dave one rocker and I'm
harder than Topaz"
My first musical attempts were laughable and down right disappointing. One of
the first things I bought was a Roland 808 with the idea in mind to create the
Techno that I loved. Man what a limp penis that was, I quickly found out that
every song I had heard up to this date was a pre-set loop on this stupid machine
with your occasional "YEAH", "HOUSE OF GOD", and "INSOMNIAC" inserted in to
break up the completely monotonous bullshit that this so called instrument
cranked out. I traded that piece of shit in for a bass and I have been playing
it ever since.
My first band wasn't really a band, I played with a bunch of guys just jamming
around. It was not that great but not many people are Mozart and just bind body
and soul with an instrument the first time they pick it up. My second band was
called Krypton's Illist Liquid Lords... Yet another project that the only thing
that came from it were a couple crummy shows and a shit attitude from everyone.
I went through a series of subbing, trying out, whatever until I formed Input
Output with Brad and Rich. The music wasn't bad but the band was doomed before
the pick hit the strings, more so that everyone didn't have the same aspirations
of music. The same can be said about later experiences such as Antipode, 12
Gauge Noise, and earlier incarnations of the Atomic Thunder Lizards. I have a
lot of respect for the musicians that I have worked with, and they are sometimes
good to see out and playing again even if we didn’t have the same feelings about
the music.
