VIOLIN CAN GROOVE

About Me

Sébastien Savard
Beginning at the age of six, Sébastien spent 15 years learning the classical violin. During his studies, at 11 years old, he was introduced to the world of folk music. It was then that his passion for musical exploration first made itself known. That same year, he began picking up other instruments and created his first band, which would serve as a laboratory for testing his own compositions.
At the age of 15, he joined in the creation of the widely-known show Québec Issime, in which he played the violin, guitar, saxophone, mandolin and harmonica. There, he was able to flourish over the next seven years. Thanks to that show, Sébastien had the opportunity to play with some of Québec’s greatest singers, including, among others, Richard Séguin, Laurence Jalbert, Éric Lapointe, Bruno Pelletier, Claude Dubois and Mario Pelchat, with whom he would later go on tour (for one year, from 2001 to 2002, in addition to performing on his 20th anniversary album).
This talented young man participated in numerous competitions, such as Le festival du Royaume and Le festival de Silerie. In the span of five years, he took home nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals for various disciplines including classical violin, jazz, folk music, guitar, saxophone, classical violin duet and classical and pop ensemble.
He would later make several TV appearances, the most notable of which were those made for the Saint-Jean Baptiste Day festivities on the Plains of Abraham, in front of a crowd of 150,000 people, as well as for the Summit of the Americas show, where he shared the stage with such renowned artists as Yuri Buenaventura, Paul Anka and Buena Vista Social Club.
In 2002, he became the solo violinist for the Cirque du Soleil show Quidam. To date, he has played in more than 2,000 performances with this troupe, in some 13 different countries.
His many travels have given him inspiration, and writing music has now become an integral part of his life as an artist. His mission is to show the whole world that there is a lot of room for the violin in today’s music. It was with this in mind that he created a popular YouTube video called Violin Can Rock. The artist develops his own creations beginning with the styles of electronic and world music. He composes all of his songs entirely on his own, using various elements of composition, of which the centrepiece, the violin, is played by him. His diverse repertoire is a testament to his versatility and originality.
He is already beginning to make headway, namely with Broadjam, one of the biggest websites for musicians. The site has broadcast one of his compositions, Groove My Day, in the Canadian Top 10, and two others, Dubai and What’s Up, in the Earth Top 10, on several occasions. He also writes music for circus artists looking for original music to accompany their acts and has created musical clown acts as well.
All of his successes haven’t left him complacent. The man continues to reinvent himself and further develop his musical skills, namely by continuing to master the guitar through an Internet correspondence program with the Berklee College.
Enjoy.
