The Syracuse Community Choir is a community of people who gather to sing songs of peace and social justice. We work to educate each other and the greater community about social and political issues - mainly focusing on issues of peace, indigenous rights, civil rights, environmental rights, religious acceptance, and inclusion of all people. The choir rehearses weekly, and performs several times a year at concerts and various community events. The membership of the choir includes a wide variety of people of varying ages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and abilities. What brings us together is an interest in music, a desire to work for social justice, and a quest for community.
“The choir is more than rehearsals, more than performance. It is part of a web to support a movement to build a world community based on cooperation and harmony rather then isolation and fear.â€
Herstory
Founder ad Choral Director Karen Mihalyi was inspired to create this annual concert after returning from a trip to Nicaragua in 1984. While there she witnessed the extraordinary work of people creating a new democracy. She saw that music and art were central to the revolution. She was then determined to assemble an all inclusive-choir based in everyone’s right to both experience and create beauty and culture. In 1985 Ms. Mihalyi organized, in conjunction with a Peace Day event the first Syracuse Community Choir Concert. Today the choir reflects that vision; it is an ever- growing group children and adults who work to educate each other and the greater community about social and political issues - mainly focusing on issues of indigenous rights, civil rights, environmental rights, religious acceptance, and inclusion of all people.
