What is Dance4life?

More than 10 million young people aged between 15 and 24 are living with HIV worldwide – half of all new infections are young people. The scale of the pandemic demands a global response. New infections are heavily concentrated in young people; we believe that so too is the possibilty for change.
This year SPW (www.spw.org) launches an exciting international initiative in the UK – Dance4Life!

You too can become actively involved in Dance4Life. Dancing to stand up against HIV and AIDS

Ways that YOU can make a difference today include:

Getting involved with the Dance4Life Schools Programme
Fundraising: raising money for HIV/AIDS projects in the countries most affected by the pandemic.
Coming to the Dance4Life Charity Events, we will keep you posted on these events.

Start dancing, Stop AIDS, Dance4Life.
Dance4Life brings young people in the UK together using all aspects of youth culture: their icons, their media, and their favourite music and dance. Dance4Life will raise knowledge and awareness of the global AIDS pandemic and challenge young people to use their energies as campaigners, advocates and fundraisers in the fight against the global AIDS crisis.
Dance4Life was founded in the Netherlands in 2004, and is the official youth campaign of the World AIDS Campaign and endorsed by the Secretary General of the United Nations:
"Dance4Life is a wonderful example of how the talent and strength of young people can energise our struggle"
Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations (2004)
Young people in the UK will join the global Dance4Life movement – connecting with other young people around the world. The dance that they will perfom will illustrate their united aim and also provides a global platform for their voices to be heard. The aim of the international Dance4Life project is to have one million young people dancing together on World AIDS Day 2012. One million agents of change, uniting in movement and ideas, all dressed in white and linked through live satellite connections to show their commitment to facing the Aids crisis and calling for those in power to listen.

Dance4Life BIG Event: On the 25 November Dance4Life UK brought together over 500 young people to dance, perform and make a high profile call to action marking World Aids Day on 1 December 2006. At the event a Satellite link up to other countries participating in the Dance4Life project meant that the young people involved in Dance4Life UK could watch their counterparts around the world as they danced together. The satellite link up demonstrated in a dramatically visual way the unity of spirit and energy that the young people shared as they danced for life around the globe.

In 2006 SPW’s Dance4Life UK::

reached 25 schools with a Dance4Life School Tour:
The School Tour roamed the UK for three weeks, delivering a high energy, high impact, interactive multi-media performance session. Averaging two schools a day the team were able to reach out to 6,000 young people between 30th October and the 17th November. The Tour Team was made up of young people from developing countries, dance facilitators and young campaigners from the UK. On the tour the team worked to inform and educate young people about the facts of Aids and also to challenge percieved notions around the subject of Aids and stigma. . HIV has the potential to effect all young people and the students who participated in the tour were invited to view HIV not as something that effets only those who live in far flung Africa, rather that it is present much closer to home; here in the UK on an increasing scale. The young people on the tour were also encouraged to acknoweldge the differences that face those who contract the virus here in the UK and those who live with the virus in the poorer communities of this world. Whilst people, young and old, here in the UK have access to the knowledge and means to choose to protect themselves from infection, this is not the case throughout the world. There are many young people who, due to circumstantial reasons (eg. poverty) are unable to make those choices. Inspired to take action young people will be supported to fundraise and raise awareness of HIV and AIDS in their schools and communities

Engaging young people in fundraising: Each school taking part in the programme has been organising their own fundraising activities – directly raising money for youth led HIV prevention programmes in Africa and South Asia. Dance4Life encourages young people, statistically a demographic that is particularly at risk from HIV, to take an active part in the process of preventing the spread of the virus. To educate those around them about the virus and to raise money for that message to be passed on around the world.

If you were involved in any fundraising for the Dance4Life UK programme get in touch with us at the London office, we would love to know how your project went. Send us an email at [email protected] describing what you organised and how it all went. If you can include pictures that would be fantastic as we would love to put them up here to let everyone know about your amazing ideas!

Informed young people about the issues: From January 2007 each Dance4Life school will be linked to a Global Peer Educator who will deliver workshops and sessions in schools to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS, poverty and other global issues, offering the chance of the students involved to become informed global citizens.
