Band Members: The Plastic Fantastic Lover was started as a
recording
project by a 20 year-old kid named Chris Jeffries
in
his apartment above the Oriental Theater, (44th
and
Tennyson), which he had turned into a studio with
a
bed. The name Plastic Fantastic Lover was chosen
by
Jeffries by a random l.p. grab out of his immense
vinyl collection (Jefferson Airplane, Surrealistic
Pillow). Working and living above the venue,
Jeffries
learned about mixing, mastering, recording, live
sound, booking and promo.
Above the Oriental, Jeffries records his first
e.p.
as
the Plastic Fantastic Lover and spends many after
hours jamming with touring bands in his apartment
(Nels Cline of Wilco, James London, Danny Vegas
who
is
on tour with the Killers). During this time
Jeffries
got a job a tattoo shop as an apprentice. "I was
an
artist long before I considered music seriously,"
Jeffries recalls. Eventually Jeffries grew bored
with
both his jobs and yearned to be on the road
touring
like so many bands that had come through to play.
So
Jeffries packed what he had and moved to the
desert
where he recorded his first full length album in a
town smaller than 5 acres. The Plastic Fantastic
Lover release entitled The Green Album features 23
tracks in which Jeffries plays 20 plus
instruments,
records, mixes, and masters the entire thing.
After its completion, Jeffries sells everything he
owns
and heads to San Francisco without a dime, just a
bus
ticket and an old epiphone. Jeffries slept on the
street. He had shows booked but it was weeks
before
the date and he had no one. Although he
experienced
hardships he says "I wouldn't trade those days fo
nothin." Since then Jeffries and The Plastic
Fantastic
Lover have toured the country singing songs of
true
stories dealing with depression, lonliness,
kidnapping, drug binges, sex motels, crackheads,
the
greyhound bus, other people's girlfriends, and the
fried chicken at the truck stop in Green River,
Utah.
