About Me

Why "contact zone"? To me, Mary Louise Pratt's coined term coincides perfectly with what I see as a perpetual state of being in these times, especially on "my space":"I use this term to refer to social spaces where cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths as they are lived out in many parts of the world today."Mary Louise Pratt, "Arts of the Contact Zone," Ways of Reading, 5th edition, ed. You are Fox Mulder. You're very intelligent, but also quite gullible. You're an annoyance to your superiors, a joke to your peers, they call you 'Spooky'. But not to worry, you'll show them all in the end! Resist or Serve! The Truth is Out There!

Books:

Right now, I'm rereading Ecstasy, by Irvine Welsh, along with On Beauty, by Zadie Smith. Of course, I'm thinking about James Joyce's story, A Painful Case, a very bitter, sad story about a man who couldn't get out of his safe box to love a woman--he didn't want to be vulnerable. Also, anything by Henry James...Georges Bataille, Jean Baudrillard, bell hooks, Michael Foucault, Audre Lorde, Octavia Butler, Kathy Acker...and I do have to admit an addiction to Laurell Hamilton's Vampire Executioner series...
