Yes we are just animals with big brains. But the thing that separates us from the herd is in my opinion, is food. What two things do all living things need, in terms of ensuring the survival of your species? At least if you have spines? Food and sex of course. Sex is easy, it's fun as hell right out of the box, you always want to do it if you're human. Food is however the biggest source of stress for an animal, the acquisition of which occupies most of an organism's available time and energy. But for us humans, those of us forutnate enough to live in relative economic comfort anyway, not only is it no longer a struggle to acquire sustenance, the preparation and consumption of food has been elevated to the stratum of art! Surely if a species can take one of the most challenging aspects of existence and turn it into art, this can be regarded as a quantum leap in development. Animals have tools, language, and war. But show me a non-human that cooks.
