About Me

if you're viewing this profile and it looks as if pictures aren't aligned correctly, it's probably because you're using crappy browser (ie. firefox or netscape). use microsoft internet explorer for the best results while surfing the internet.
this photo of me courtesy of someday dan . taken 21JAN06 at sokol underground, omaha, NE while i was playing with arbor vitae .
playing in bands has really changed my taste of music over the years. as you can probably see, i enjoy music from a lot of different artists and bands. honestly, i like music in general. i don't claim to be "scene" or "underground" or a part of a certain group of people. i'm just me and i know what i like.
so if you like some of the same things i do, then we have things in common -- and i'm okay with that if you are. but if you think i suck because i listen to some band that you think sucks, i'm not here to tell you what to listen to or who to be. i'm sure you're old enough to make your own decisions and be the kind of person you want to be. so good luck with that.
i've been playing drums for well over a decade in various projects and bands. for those interested, here's an incomplete list:
most recently, i played drums for castalia here in south carolina. i performed with this band from september 2007 to june 2008. although we broke up due to an abundance of scheduling conflicts and distance, we still have a loose plan to record the two latest songs we created and update the recording quality of our fan-favorite, "small town collective." for recording updates, please monitor our myspace profile.
my previous band was from omaha and called arbor vitae . i performed with this band from may 2004 to august 2006. although the band is no longer, the recording we had made right before i left town is something that i'm extremely proud of. we had originally planned on releasing it in an actual cd format, however due to lack of funds and interest, the project just kept getting pushed aside. so, without further adieu, here's our full length album in its entirety, free of charge.

another one of my previous bands from omaha was called miles on end . i performed with this band from february 2001 to january 2004. although i no longer played with the band by the time their professionally recorded album "when fiction fails" was released at the end of 2004, i was there through a self-released demo disc, a compilation song and 2 simultaneous-release cd ep's. as a band, we never had a problem with spreading our music as much as possible, so here's our 2 cd ep's, free of charge.

just in case you haven't figured it out already, i really like music. maybe even a little too much some would say. in addition to playing drums and creating music, i also love following other bands and projects. in fact, i'm a vault of knowledge when it comes to band and label history for the kind of music i listen to. so as you can imagine, my cd collection is huge. and believe it or not, i actually listen to every single cd i own.

i'm always listening to new music and discovering new bands that i like. the problem is, it always seems like i end up discovering the band that already have like six full lengths and 3 ep's already out, along with a new full length on the way. so, of course, i have to own them all. even the three hard-to-find out-of-print ones on a small now-defunkt label and the reprint of each one on a newer label with two bonus live tracks, new artwork and a bonus dvd. yes, i know, you don't need to tell me... haha

so if you like some of the same music i do and have some questions or are looking for a hard-to-find copy of a disc, i might be able to help you out. if you want to know exactly what i have, you'll have to ask. i used to have a list online, but the website keeps going down.

and while we're on the subject of music, here's my take on downloading music: everyone should realize that downloading cd's instead of buying them hurts not only the labels, but the bands themselves too. i personally don't download music to replace buying cd's however. if i end up liking the band (which, oddly enough, seems to be most of the time), then i end up buy their cd's -- usually all of them. in fact, if it weren't for the internet, i wouldn't have a quater of the cd's i have today. the internet helped me become a fan and customer. so i believe that downloading is okay, but if you do end up liking the band, please, please, please go out and purchase the actual cd to help support them. most bands get paid very little as is, especially if they're on an indie label.

oh, and support your scene! go to shows! especially for bands that you like from out-of-town. if no one shows up, then they'll probably never come back as it's not cheap to go on tour. trust me, i know!

here's my list of recommended current & upcoming cd's:

have information i don't? let me know!

music news:

04JUN08 - zao has scheduled their first show since 2006. they have also updated their myspace profile with new graphics and album artwork in the pictures section. they seem to be unsure as to when they may be performing another show, but have definitely pointed toward another album release in the near future: "plans for a new album? stay tuned." it is unclear at this point exactly who makes up zao right now as jeff gretz (who is still listed as the drummer according to their myspace profile) supposedly left zao to drum for vagrant records' band from autumn to ashes back in 2006.

30MAY08 - castalia has called it quits. the band members, who live in different cities, found that conflicting work schedules was not conducive to a band. their final show will be in columbia, south carolina on 06JUN08. they have loose plans to record their two newest songs and a fan favorite for release free through their myspace profile. for updates on the recording, please monitor their myspace profile .

12APR08 - showbread keytarist, john giddens, decided to quit the band to persue a more "normal" life. with 2 simultaneous full lengths scheduled for release on 13MAY08, they have no plans to slow down and even have a tour plan still in works.

04APR08 - inept drummer, joey ossey, has left the band. having just released their debut full length, "so much between us," inept are taking messages from qualified applicants that are willing to relocate to denver, colorado and devote a full schedule to music. for more information, please contact inept through their myspace account.

02APR08 - far-less keyboardist Elizabeth "Bitsy" Pina decided in the middle of their current tour that she didn't want to tour or be in the band anymore. leaving them no time for a replacement, they are going to finish their current tour (which goes until the end of april) and "regroup" in virginia. it doesn't appear as if they plan to break-up; "we love all of you who have continued to support us and you should know that we [plan to] keep on keepin’ on."

09MAR08 - desole has decided to call it quits. they had apparently recorded a brand new album, but has since decided not to release it. there will be a final show in a few days on 14MAR08.

01MAR08 - daughters is entering the studio to record their third full length. as of now, no record label has been announced.

19FEB08 - modern life is war has decided to call it quits. they don't cite a specific reason and don't plan to release any more material. their final show will be in their hometown, marshalltown, iowa on 26APR08.

05FEB08 - living sacrifice has reunited. they have plans to tour this summer with demon hunter, advent and others. they also have plans for a new full length for release later this year.

04FEB08 - the format has decided to call it quits. they have no plans to release any new material and there were no reasons sited as to why the decision was made.

25JAN08 - you in series has decided to call it quits. they do not plan to release any more material and their only full length is still available on equalvision records .

08DEC07 - senses fail bassist mike glita is leaving the band. according to the blog posted recently on the band's profile, he simply wishes to move on and persue personal ventures. senses fail currently has no intention of breaking up.

23NOV07 - a thorn for every heart is looking for a new label home. this is due to interscope records completely dropping kickball records and all of their associated artists from their company. the band is now looking into purchasing the rights for "it's hard to move you." currently, there is no release date for the upcoming full length.

20NOV07 - comeback kid is losing thier bassist kevin call. kevin is the second original member to quit the band in the last 2 years. the band does not plan to break-up and will continue on as a band.

i think it's funny to see other people's profiles and read comments like, "i'm not going to be one of those jerks that lists every single freakin' band i listen to..." well, just for those type of people, here's a decent attempt to list all the bands i listen to (in NO particular order):

the science of god - gerald schroeder

the age of spirtual machines : when computers exceed human intelligence - ray kurzwell

the quantum brain - jeffrey satinover

the elegant universe - brian greene

emergence : the connected lives of ants, brains, cities and software - steven johnson

Heroes:

um... here's this instead:
zao - autopsy
and what shall i do?
i try to speak and words stop short of my tongue
they make their way back to my thoughts
still crafted by a still soul
i move my eyes around trying to find a place to rest
i can't see it, but i feel the light
someone tell us we are loved
someone take the pain away
someone fill up the void
someone fix my broken heart
are you that someone?
--------------------
zao - 5 year winter
dear tiffany,
you've made me nauseous for the last time
everything i've said to you....
i will form into a spike (to drive through my throat) in order to stop my words
this time i'll put them in the ground along with my memories and my feelings
i'll burn it down and walk away
let the fire warm my back
i wish that you would say you hate me
that would make it so much easier
so much easier
burn it down and walk away
...love daniel
--------------------
hopesfall - a man exits
i escaped the horizon
feeling nothing was the easiest existence
leaving a world of regret in a wake of flames
no flame ever burned as bright
i will not leave a martyr
no more eyes to frame my falls
i can't live life for closed hearts
joy left me that day
pulled from my hands as they robbed me of life
i am leaving earth
burning the past as i turn and wave goodbye
i am finally alive
--------------------
saves the day - this is not an exit
tonight will be the night that we begin to ease the plugs out of the dam
and we will stand knee deep in the flow, the undertow will grab our heels and won't let go
and while we hold, our legs quivering, the water rises now to our teeth when we just let go
and sail belly up to the clouds, the rocks scraping our backs
to breathe in the air, will be the only thing that we have
and all the wasted nights and empty moments in our lives are flushed away as we sway with the rhythm of the waves bobbing us up
crests fall to troughs as we feel our gills open up
and if the hook set in the bottom of our lungs, we'll rip it out and lick the blood off with our tongues
despair could ravage you if you turn your head around to look down the path that's lead you here, cause what can you change?
you're a vessel now, floating down the waterways
you can take your rudder and aim your ship, just don't bother with the things left in your wake
and your love will be warm nights with pockets of moonlight
spotlighting you as you drift, the actor in this play
you walk across the stage, take a bow, hear the applause
and as the curtain falls, just know you did it all
the best that you knew how and you can hear them cheering now
so let a smile out and show your teeth cause you know you lived it well
--------------------
brandtson - bricks and windows
i won't be the one to wait outside your door
watch it all fall down around your head
i won't be that one, anymore
so shine on me, the sun, to white out my whole world
catch it on my tongue, these words once said
i won't be that one, no, not anymore
there's more than a million questions i could ask, but it wouldn't matter at all
so take me and tear me open, i won't bleed until you're gone
i don't understand your actions
