About Me

The Southern Joint Committe is a "GROOVE METAL" band based in Newport News, VA. In the fall of 2002 Rickey, the lead guitarist was at a depressing point musicaly. He had been playing guitar since he was about 15 (now the ripe old age of 29) and grew up on old Metallica, Pantera, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen,Vai, Satriani, and several other "shredders". Every band he attempted to play with was more into the Korn, Limp Dickshit "Nu Metal" crap. He vowed that he would put together a band that would destroy this shit and honor his forefathers in the process. But he never seemed to find the guys to jam with that shared both his vision and his passion for the music. Then he met Bobby Dotson. Rickey said.." Bobby came to work where I do and he noticed my Pantera shirt and started shooting the breeze about how the break up rumors were true and how much that pissed us off"."We started hangin out,get fucked up and listeng to old metal records, and then came the fatefull night"."Bobby saw my guitars and shit and asked me about my playing, so I jammed out for him, he thought it was cool and asked me why I was'nt in a band, (in the background Pantera's "Fucking Hostile" is playing) and I said "cause I aint found a dude that could scream like that". and he says" I can". So I said "prove it" and he did!! Shortly after this Bobby and Rickey started working on music and looking for other musicians. " We were having no luck"says Rickey. We could not find a bass player or a drummer"."We got Aaron completely by accident, he was dating a friend of my wife and came over to meet us. He had been hanging with us and one night just says... " You know I play bass right". So of course we recruit him." He told us that he did'nt have alot of experiance, which we thought was perfect because we could kinda mold him.Guess what bitches it worked! Rickey and Aaron moved into a house and now they had a place to practice. This is when things really started to get going. They were now calling themselves Southern Joint Committe and had about five or so original songs written, but no drums, so they got a drum machine. "we used that thing for a while" notes Aaron. "We even played our first show with that damned thing!!!" "We were desperatly looking for a drummer with no luck, until I happened upon a musicians classified ad that looked interesting"." So I e-mailed the guy he came over and jammed, that was Ryan and he's been with us ever since. "Ryan's style was not exactly what we thought we were looking for"says Rickey. "Ryan had a bluesier sound, not that over technical double bass stuff". Funny thing is when I started playing guitar I was all into the blues, and Ryan brought that back out in my playing, in a biiiiiig way. I have always loved blues and metal", and I love the fact that I am able to use them both inthis band". It is now about a year after Ryan's introduction and they have been playing out for a little over a year. Anyone who has witnessed them live has nothing but the utmost respect for them. They do there forefathers proud and should definatly be seen by all !!!!
