Mexican WhiteBoy , by Matt de la Peña
Delacorte Press, August, 2008
Danny and Uno form an unlikely friendship after Danny hits Uno’s brother with a baseball bat, and Uno repays the favor by giving Danny stitches. It’s rare to find an author with a voice that is resonant and clear yet remains completely unobtrusive and does not pander to his audience. De la Peña manages this delicate balance with a narrative that reels in the reader and succinctly paints the vivid, painful and compelling parallels between Danny and Uno in this coming of age story. Both Danny and Uno yearn for their fathers’ love and acceptance, while never really fitting into their worlds completely—Danny’s mother is white and his father is Mexican, while Uno’s father is Black and his mother is Mexican. Together they forge a bond that allows both to deal with the pain of being on the outside looking in. A page-turner.
