Caribbean Dance Theatre

'the opportunity to partake in an artistic Caribbean Canadian experience'

About Me

Caribbean Dance Theatre (CDT) is a 10 year old, all female dance group, specializing in an array of African Caribbean based dance styles. The French Caribbean term 'Toute Baghai' would be the appropriate phrase to describe what this group has to offer; a little bit of everything. Tamla Matthews is the Artistic Director and the Head choreographer of the company which exists to celebrate the Caribbean contribution to the Canadian cultural mosaic.Committed to artistic integrity and professionalism, the company exists to promote and explore different forms of Black Dance and challenge limiting stereotypes of Caribbean dance. CDT is a cultural ambassador that celebrates Canadian culture with a Caribbean Flair! The Irie Music Festival website described the company's work as offering the opportunity "to partake in an artistic Caribbean Canadian experience". In short, the company continues to refine a style that honours the root, celebrates the present and creates possibilities for the future of Black dance! The company can be reached at [email protected] contact Tamla at [email protected] to find out more about choreography, dance, or bring CDT to your event.CDT SERVICES: Bring some culture to your school, organization or agency this Black History month. We have a variety of ways to be involved: interactive audience participation games bride/groom entrances, dance floor openings and a host of other unique ways to create a signature wedding! One happy couple had this to say: "I just wanted you to know that you and your dancers added a special touch to our wedding. Even though I had planned to have you ladies come and perform, I was still surprised, excited and thrilled at the dances and music you chose to perform. My husband said afterwards, that it was one of the best things we spent our money on.The dancers, the music, the costumes and the great energy were amazing. Your performance helped to make our guests comfortable and they were surprised by the entertainment. Your performance gave our wedding that extra touch of the African/Caribbean theme we had intended and was a demonstration of African/Caribbean culture that some guests have not experienced. I had some guests say that they felt like they were on a Caribbean Island. After their wedding day, most brides think about what went wrong and what they would have changed. With all the things that may not have gone 100% as planned, the performance by the Caribbean Dance Theatre was an aspect of our wedding that I would not have changed at all. The music was uplifting and it fit perfectly with the theme of our wedding. The outfits were vibrant, the ladies beautiful and the performance top notch.Thank you so much for being part of our special day and adding that touch of class to our event. It is a memory that we will cherish forever.I will definitely have you and your company in mind when we have other events and when I am helping to plan the wedding of my three sisters, friends and other family. May God always bless you and continue to keep you successful in all your future endeavours." - Gbemi & Paul Major, married September 2006 Walk Good Alwayz!
