DROWN ME IN A POOL OF MY BLOOD! PREMIERS '06 THIS IS AN ARTICLE I FOUND ABOUT OUR WIN. I GET A MENTION YAY. Coming into the Division Two Reserves Grand Final on the back of the Minor Premiership and a thumping Second Semi Final win over Norwood, many considered Rowville to be almost an unbackable favourite to take out the Division Two Reserves title this season. But on what turned out to be a significant day in the history of the Scoresby Football Club, the Magpies turned "the battle of the birds" into their own personal aviary, as they flew away from the Hawks to win the Division Two Reserves Premiership by 45 points at Tormore Reserve last Saturday, as SHAUN KELLY reports. The Magpies finished the season in third place on the Division Two reserves ladder, and after two narrow losses to Rowville during the season, many expected the Hawks, with five players from their 2005 Senior Grand Final line-up, to be too strong. Scoresby, however, had other ideas, and jumped the Hawks in the first quarter to take a fifteen point advantage into the quarter-time huddle. After the usual nervous start to the game that we commonly see in Grand Finals, Mark Cullen capitalised from some good work at ground level to put the first goal of the match on the board for Scoresby in the ninth minute of the match. They didn't have to wait long for goal number two either, as Jason Wolk showed his vast experience by roving a stoppage beautifully to kick truly. Cody Morris soon answered with Rowville's first goal, but the defensive pressure Scoresby were creating in their forward line was causing their opponents to make even the simplest of mistakes, and resulted in both Ben Lockhart and David Wade to swoop onto loose balls to kick consecutive goals late in the quarter for the Magpies to give them the break at the first change. Rowville came out from quarter-time determined not to let their grasp on the contest slip away, and they got away to the perfect start when a ruck tap deep in the Hawks forward line by Danny Kennaugh found a waiting Richard Morello, who roved beautifully to bring the Hawks back within nine points early in the quarter. With Kennaugh on top in the ruck, and Paul Giannopoulos, Troy Allen and Clint Walker starting to work their way into the game, the signs looked ominous for Scoresby. It took a masterful move by Magpie coach Glenn Stallworthy to swing momentum back in favour of the Magpies, as he moved vice-captain Matt Johnson into the ruck. Johnson had an immediate impact by not only competing with Kennaugh at centre bounces, but also by kicking two goals by drifting into the forward line to really hurt the Hawks. With Travis Mulder also adding his name to the scoresheet during the quarter, Scoresby entered the half-time break seemingly with one hand on the Premiership Cup, leading by 27 points. Rowville again started in better fashion after the break, this time with Justin Davis kicking his first goal of the day inside the first minute of the third quarter. It then took twenty minutes for either side to find the big sticks, with both Scoresby and Rowville missing chances throughout. Phillip Muscat was doing a mighty job of presenting an option in the Scoresby forward line, but couldn't pull the trigger to score a major, whilst Rowville were being provided with good run by Walker and Allen, but kept getting cut off by the Scoresby half-back line, led by Rowan Pybus. Both teams needed some luck, and it was Rowville that got the break when Morris got his foot to a stray ball in the Rowville goalsquare that rolled through for his second goal, and cutting the Magpies lead to inside three goals. Scoresby soon answered, though, with Jeremy Fraser's good work at the feet of Muscat bringing the Magpies lead back out to twenty-three points, before Davis's second goal in the shadows of three-quarter time brought the Hawks back to within sixteen points, and with a sniff at the final break. With both teams desperate to kick the all-important first goal of the final quarter, the pressure to start the final stanza was enormous. Cullen, Adam Gaggino and Rowan Pybus was again creating chances for Scoresby, but the work of the Rowville backline, led by Gavin Willoughby, was fantastic to repel the Magpies early. But weight of possession into the Scoresby forward line soon became too much for the Hawks to overcome, and when a David Wade snapshot from close to the boundary line sailed through for Scoresby's first goal of the quarter, the floodgates soon opened. Not long after, Muscat kicked his first goal of the day, just reward for the dominant forward on the ground for the day, after marking a long kick by Pybus in the goalsquare. When Jason Wolk took a diving mark and kick his second goal inside time-on to extend the Scoresby lead to 35 points, Magpie fans started to celebrate, and officials headed back to Scoresby Reserve to clear space in their trophy cabinet. Anthony Vanin then capped off the day by adding the last two goals of the game, both from opportunistic strikes from within the goalsquare, before the final siren sounded with Scoresby forty-five points clear, and the first of what would be two Premiership victories for the day. After captain Simon Anning and coach Glenn Stallworthy accepted the Premiership Cup, the Scoresby players formed a guard of honour, with premiership medals glistening in the afternoon sun, for their senior team-mates as they entered Tormore Reserve to take on Norwood in the senior Grand Final. As they offered encouragement to Kevin Girola as he led the senior Magpies onto the ground, the Scoresby Reserves reflected on a fantastic season that ended in the perfect fashion, and urged their team-mates to replicate their achievements and top off a history-making season for the Scoresby Football Club.
