Sounds Like: INTERVIEW WITH A ROCK BANDPrior to their concert promoting the film Pusher 2, we met with the Danish band HYPERLOVE for a brief discussion of the struggle for the big contract, chanelling the thoughts of the muses and Rock`n`Roll.Where did the name “HYPERLOVE†come from? And what does it mean?Elsebeth: As I recall it, Gert asked me to go home and think of a name for the band. And I came up with a number of names actually. But when I read the names to the boys they immidiately agreed on HYPERLOVE. I was actually a little more inclined to “Carnage†or “Smitten Kittenâ€. But I was overruled (laugh) and as it turned out, I think we made the right choice.Gert: Well I thought the name was so possitive and still a little far out. You know a little Sci-fi. and our generel sound is a bit psykedelic so the name just fitted us perfectly. What is your musical background and how did you meet?:Elsebeth: I don´t really have a musical background. (all laugh) It´s true. I never thought I would become a rock singer. I didn´t even know I could sing untill I was 18 and I started playing the guitar, rather poorly I might add. And the voice just came along. I was going to be an actress. And got a job in a kind of poetry-slam-theatre project where I was asked to write a few songs. We needed someone to produce them, and that was how I met Gert and through him Henrik and Bjarne.Gert: I have been playing music all my life. I was in a professional punk band at the age of 13. Quite famouse in Denmark called “City Xâ€. And from then on I have played in numerous bands. Including “Stalin Staccato†where i played with Henrik and “Free Cloud Nine†with Bjarne. The three of us go back a long time.Henrik: Yes we been involved in several projects but we´ve always ended up in the same bands one way or the other. Some of them quite succesfull too. As Gert said we played in a band called “Stalin Stacatto†and had an album out in Poland and went on a grand scale tour there. The only problem was that we weren´t allowed to take any money we earned out of the country so we actually lived like kings while we were there.Bjarne: Watch out. Here comes the stories! Tell them about your boots.(all laugh)Gert: No come on! Lets behave okay.Henrik: He barfed in my new boots. I had just bought this great pair of boots. Really expensive too and Gert, who I shared a room with came back one evening. Stoned out of his mind, fell on the bed and turned over and barfed in my new boots!Gert: You´ll never forgive me for that! The booze was cheap. And so was your boots! I think I did you a favour really. What can I say. We had fun in those days.Bjarne: I have also played in a lot of bands. I met Gert in a heavy metal band called “Free Cloud Nineâ€. We played a lot of jobs. In Copenhagen in those days it was much easier to get a gig. There really was a music life. But any way.We needed a new drummer. So Gert came in.Gert: And fired the singer.Bjarne: True. But it was a good band. And then of course there was Funclub.Henrik: Yeah. That was as I see it the ground builder for HYPERLOVE. It was Bjarne, Gert and I and Gerts daughter Tikkie on vocal.Gert : But she didn´t want to work with her old man. And at that time I had met Elsebeth and was pretty impressed with her voice and her tunes so without coming on too strong I sort of hinted that if she had nothing better to do, we sort of needed a singer.Elsebeth: And I needed a band. And had been rather impressed with Gert. And I felt relaxed in his presence, and was able to explore my voice and got quite adventurous recording with him. So when he asked me I immediately said yes.Gert: And here we are!Your first demo was selected “Demo of the Month†in the Danish Music magazine Gaffa and you have been chosen for the soundtrack to the film Pusher 2. Many bands need along time before they find their sound. Yours happened immediately. Why do you think that is?Gert: We fight alot. But hey, thats Rock´n´Roll for you. We also love each other alot. And we feel very passionate about music. So through those fights and compromises you´re forced to make, the sound just popped up. We are explorers really. I feel we tend to push each other, sometimes rather roughly, across the borders. We sqeeze the essence out of each other.Elsebeth: To boldly go where no man has gone before!! But still. Okay, I´m a bit of a superstitious person, but sometimes you get the feeling that fate definately has something to do do with it. Fate or the muses. Or demons or whatever.Henrik: The best songs are actually the ones you feel are “handed down†to you. The moment where every thing just clicks. The lyrics, the music. And that is better than any drug. You are working on your first album. When will it be out?Bjarne: When its done. We feel we have the potential and the material for a great debut album. Actually we have the materiale for two albums at this point. But we have decided to boil it down to one hit-slammer of an album!Henrik: We are not going to rush the procedure. Rather give it our best and hope that in the meantime some record company writes us a big fat check.Gert: But dont get the idea that we are only in this for the money! Rock´n´roll is our soul! Our blood!
Henrik: Yes of course. Our life. Always has been. Always will be.Elsebeth: Yes well. Speak for yourself. I also want the money.
