Beginning the early years in the classroom, approximately in the 6th grade, around the age of 12, Ronald Downer began his journey into the field of music. He started out tapping drums upon the classroom tables, and like most children back in the day, he received a caning.
One day the class was preparing a folk song where instruments were brought in. The drum especially caught Ronald’s interest. No one in his class at the time could play the drums and Ronald took it upon himself to give the class a quick lesson in music. It was at that time that Ronald found out that the drums were his instrument of choice.
He told his older brother, Neville who is also a musician, about his interests. His brother helped to nurture his talent by allowing Ronald to accompany him to rehearsals for bands such as The Heartbeat Band, 12 Tribes Band and Generation Gap Band. It was at this time that Ronald jumped at every opportunity to play the drums when the musicians where setting up or finished with their rehearsals.
In the 80’s with his desire and interest in music flourishing, Ronald and a couple of his friends decided to start a band called Our Sound. They started out in Ronald’s garage and quickly moved to rehearsing with Fab Five band studio at Constant Spring road.
One day Grub Cooper unknowingly came to the studio, while Ronald was rehearsing, and heard him singing and quickly inquired, “Who dat?†Grub Cooper immediately signed Ronald up for a couple of voice training sessions. Shortly thereafter, Ronald was getting his feet wet alongside musicians such as Unique Vision, Roy Rayon and members from his brother’s band, and as we say the rest is history.
