I began playing drums at school at the age of 14 and went on to form my first band with some school friends at 15 called the kushites, we played at local functions in and around the London area.
In the later stages of the band we brought in three female backing vocalist who later become Brown Sugar, it was whilst working with these girls that a chance situation arose and i was introduced to Denis Bovel. He was then head engineer at dip recording studios and he gave me my first paid recording session at the age of 17.
There was also another engineer there and his name was John Kipaye and i went on to record many tracks with both of these great musicians, playing drums for Brown Sugar, TT Ross, Cassandra, and many other artist....
But all goods things must come to an end and after a couple of years the studio folded but only after shaping reggae in the UK and terming the name Lovers Rock which was a very British style of reggae, which went on to dominate the British reggae scene for many years.
The Kushites also disbanded not too long after the studios closed which started the next journey in my life, I met up with an old friend of mine Charles Nelson, he was a keyboard player we got together and started to jam with a few friends, the music sounded good and we decided to form a band, but there was one missing element and that was resolved when we got a long time friend and vocalist of ours to join the band. That was Pauline Thomas so along with Paul Dywer, Hughie Pierre, Patrick Harris, Charles Nelson and myself NATURAL TOUCH was formed. We needed an outlet for our music and by chance Charles new an independent record producer that was Neville King. He came to rehearsals and liked what he heard and decided to record the band.
The first record didn't exactly set the world on fire but it got the name noticed. We continued to record and things suddenly changed we had hit after hit culminating in a six week stint at number in the British reggae charts with the song "Gimme gimme loving", so we took the show on the road and toured the length and breadth of Britain.
It was on one of these shows that I met someone who told me DESMOND DEKKER was looking for a drummer and pianist for a few shows, although busy with our own band we decided to give it a go, but a few shows became a few too many shows and it became impossible to do both acts, a decision had to be made but by this time the travel bug had seriously hit me which made my decision a little easier i became the drummer for the ACES and toured the world with Des for 24 years, but as most of you will know the great man died in may 2006.
We use to say that his voice was a gift, a gift we all will miss, but thanks to the many recording he made we will delight in his great voice for many years to come.
