I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4 The Mugwumps began as a series of tape experimentations using a cheap RCA recorder, analog effect pedals ( 1 boss metal zone distortion pedal, one Danelectro Cool Cat) a broken Marshall practice amplifier, a 1970's vacuum cleaner that does not work, a tiny digital recorder, a Squire Bass, and a completely fucked up Ibanez guitar. An ever-changing array of spoons, shards of metal, buckets, freak radio signals, broken cell-phones, blenders, hammers, scratched CD's all play a significant role in the sound. The recording process is painstakingly slow and absurdly over-complicated. First, different sounds are recorded on to three or four seperate tapes, which we then play simultaneously into one mic. From there, the songs are fed into the computer and shat out for the world to suffer through. Imagine an ugly collage crudely pasted together with various elements of Zen buddhism as the adhesive, a series of cut-up techniques pioneered by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin to form a slimy quilt of influences such as Throbbing Gristle and Coil, throw a few hours full of LSD and some transcendental meditation into the mix and that is the sound of Mugwump. Taking our que from Dadaist and Situationist philosophy, Mugwumps aim to deconstruct conciousness and achieve audio anarchy through drone, distortion, feedback, and discord.
