About Me

UPDATE 11/02/2007 : I know it has been a while since I've put anything new up, but I have been very busy getting everything moved into my new house. Back in late September/early October I was asked by Bryan Kinnard, the creator of the independently published Villikon Chronicles graphic novel series, to create some original artwork to be used in the credit sequences of the short film based on his work. The film is currently in the post production stages. Of course I was more than happy to agree to work with him. The first piece that I completed is now viewable in my pics under the folder "Other Artwork". Please support my work and the work of everyone else involved in this new and exciting science fiction universe.

By the Way: Don't forget to check under my pics for the rest of my comic related art. My newest original work can be found in the Temple of the Gugur folder. Let me know what you think.

So as you probably know my name is Christopher Ryan Harris(last time I checked at least...and call me Chris) I am a 25 year old single male, and I currently live in my home town of Lynchburg, VA. I had my my own house, but I just put it up for sale and it has a contract on it already. My parents are moving back to Lynchburg and we are getting a large multi-family size house so that we can all have our own living space and help each other out at the same time. So I will have plenty of space if anyone wants to come visit. I have been living with my wonderful last chance dog Cash (who tries to carry off a little darkness on his back). Fire rained down on my life and I lost everything, but I came out with him in the end. Once my parents move back into town, Cash will be joined by their dogs Lefty and June. All of them are dogs that we have rescued from dire circumstances - we don't believe in buying dogs when so many are neglected and in need.

I spent my first 18 or so years in Lynchburg before moving to Richmond to receive my B.F.A. from Virginia Commonwealth University in drawing, painting and printmaking. After 4 years of hell in college I moved back in with my parents (who had then relocated to Martinsville, VA) until I could get on my own two feet - which put me in my own house in Lynchburg. While in Martinsville, I took a year off from college - during which I still took a large amount of psychology classes (yeah I know, wasn't much of a break). When I moved back to Lynchburg I started working on my Masters of Science in Education for Pk-6 grade from Old Dominion University. Next spring semester will be my last and I will be doing my student teaching.

Even though I love working with children, and I have since I was a teenager, my real career interest lies in the arts - I chose to get my graduate degree in teaching so I would be sure to always have a paying job if my fantasies fall through. I am an aspiring comic book creator, doing all of the writing and illustrating myself. I don't exactly get much time to work on it lately, but I'm slowly plugging away at it.

I am also getting back into playing music - I was in two bands during my high school days and two in college, but I had to choose between art and music. I never stopped writing and playing though, and I am always looking for people to jam with. Currently I am learning to record music digitally using programs I have on the computer. Let me know if you want to here any of it.

I am planning on staying in Lynchburg for the foreseeable future. My (non-blood related) brother Kascene lives here and I am godfather to his son Kashawn - I really couldn't stand missing out on him growing up, which is a big reason for me moving back.

I don't really like to try and describe myself to other people; it always makes me feel somehow full of myself. But lets give it a whirl. People have told me that I am an amazing guy with a heart of gold, but I just think I'm a regular guy, so who is to say which is the truth.

I suffer from severe arthritis and severe fybromyalgia. In other words I am in lots of pain. All of the time. Day in and day out since I was six years old. But I am hard to kill or put down. I never give up and I never give in. I have amazing willpower and it gets me through just about everything that I face. I've even beaten death a few times. I try to lead as pure a life as I can to set a good example for the youth that I work with and so that others can see the tribulations I have had to come through to get where I am. I hope that by doing this I can inspire someone with my struggles.

I am a minister that does not have a church to lead. A steadfast Disciple of Christ, I minister to others through my life and deeds. I preach love and forgiveness, I preach openess and universal acceptance. I give of myself more than I get from others, and often feel like most people abandon me in the end. But I never learn and I keep trying to trust in others and love.

I try to be kind and understanding to all those that I meet. I forgive before there is anything to truly forgive. When I love, truly love, I believe in loving deeply, with every ounce of my existence, no matter what age, shape, size, or race someone is. Anything else would be worthless and render life meaningless. But sometimes it results in me getting hurt more than I'd like to remember. I keep doing it anyway.

I'm extremely loyal and affectionate to those friends I bring close and am very protective of them. Moreso than I am of myself. I also have a strong sense of justice and honor (perhaps to a fault).

I love to talk to people about pretty much anything, especially if they can carry their own side of the conversation intellectually. I love to help, and I love to feel needed and appreciated.

I am a huge movie fan - my main interest lies in horror, but I watch a little of everything. I am also into anime, music, comics of course, and video games.

I'm sure that other's comments about me will give you a better unbiased opinion of what type of person I am. And if you really want to get to know me then just talk me instead of reading this, and see what you find.

My Interests

I enjoy any type of art, I mostly do sequential art and digital paintings these days. I love playing my guitar and writing music, but I don't get to do it as much as I'd like. I love watching movies and am a big film buff. I also love playing video games, I'll play most anything. I love reading, and try to read everyday. Reading what I want is hard with all the books I have to read for school, but I do what I can.

I'd like to meet:

Jesus, Johnny Cash, Bruce Campbell, Jack Kirby, and Ric Flair. 'nuff said.

Music:

When my mom was pregnant with me in Nashville I was exposed to all the greats like Johnny Cash, Waylon and Willie, etc. This probably explains my love of outlaw country – I don’t like any other country, especially the new commercial cookie cutter rock/pop that passes for it. I would definitely say Johnny Cash is my favorite without a doubt.

I grew up listening to my dad’s record collection with bands like Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin. The first music I discovered on my own was Thrash/Speed Metal.

Bands: Johnny Cash, Black Sabbath and Ozzy, 80’s Metallica, Led Zep, Pink Floyd, Motorhead, Megadeth, Iron Maiden, The Beatles, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Tool, AC/DC

Movies:

I can't possibly name my favorite movies...well except for the Evil Dead trilogy. Directors is easier since I tend to follow certain ones - Peter Jackson (LOTR, Braindead), Guillermo Del Toro (Cronos, Devil's Backbone, Blade II, Hellboy, Pan's Labyrinth), David Cronenberg (A History of Violence, Videodrome, The Fly, Scanners, The Brood), Akira Kurosawa (one of the world's greatest and most influential - Seven Samarai, Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo, Ran), Hitchcock, Robert Rodrigez, Quinten Tarintino, a lot of old German Expresionist directers like F.W. Murnau and Fritz Lang. I watch anything horror, but I like something in most genres.

Television:

I went through my undergrad years without even being able to pick up the local channels. Now thanks to the advent of DVR I've found lots of shows I love. I don't get to watch much, usually just when I am making art, but every once in a while I will go on a day-long binge and get caught up on the shows I'm missing.

Shows I try to watch: Lost, Heroes, Supernatural, House, Battlestar Gallactica, Ghost Hunters, and 24.

Shows I like to watch but I'm very far behind on because of lack of time: Medium, CSI: Vegas, and Law and Order: Criminal Intent and SVU(used to watch the original, but it went to hell after Jerry Brisco left then died)

Past shows: Homicide (which I think is the best show ever on TV), Twin Peaks, American Gothic, Firefly, He-man and the Masters of the Universe, Transformers, GI Joe, Thundercats, Voltron.

I enjoy a lot of anime fansubs; I can't stand the way most of it is butchered for mass American consumption, and even when it is unedited the American script translation can be awful. Regular shows include Naruto and now Naruto Shippuuden, Dragon Ball (original over Z, but Z is cool too), Bleach, anything Gundam, Monster, Elfen Lied, Cowboy Bebop, Blood +, Gankutsuo, Trigun, Samurai Champloo, Samurai 7, Speed Grapher, Gantz, Berserk, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Akira, Appleseed, and above all else - any film by Hayato Miyazaki.

Books:

I read so much it's hard to list them all. The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, Narnia and most anything else by C.S. Lewis, The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (current favorite), the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, and of course more comic series over the years than I can even think of. I read constantly.

Heroes:

The man Jesus. My parents as corny as that sounds. My Grandma Schmid who was the strongest person I ever met. Johnny Cash for being the man in black. Bruce Campbell for kicking deadite ass with his boomstick. Ric Flair for being the limousine ridin', jet flyin', kiss stealin', wheelin' dealin', stylin' and profilin' son of a gun!

About my art and graphic novel

I wanted a concise way for people to learn about the comic world that I am creating, so I figured that it might be good to put all of the information in blogs and not clog up my main page with it...
