RJs History

When the Laycock family bought The Golden Guinea Club back in January 1985, no one could have foreseen the transformation that was to take place.

12 months on, in January 1986, The Basement was closed and major building work took place. Concrete pilings were installed into the sand foundations to a depth of over 40’. Major structural alterations saw all the separation walls of the three buildings come down and steel RSJ’s installed as the building underwent a complete overhaul.

On December 12th 1986 the new club RJ’s opened in the basement of the Golden Guinea Club, as an early evening venue. As further work continued, this time on the top floor removing separation walls and low ceilings, the new " Le Coq Loft" opened on 4th December 1987.

The club went from strength to strength and during the Summer of 1988 the middle floor, including the new bar and diner, plus the new reception, underwent renovation before opening on Friday 8th December 1988.

The whole club was then renamed RJ’s opening all three floors ‘til 2am.

During its time the club has played host to some of the biggest DJ names in the UK. Including Jon Cecchini (Cream), Dave Ralph (Cream – Homelands), Pez Tellett (051 – Radio City), Steve Proctor (Polydor), Tall Paul ( ), Pete Waterman (PWL) plus radio DJ’s including Darren Proctor (Smash Hits), Kev Seed (Radio City), Brian Moore (Rock FM), Nik Goodman (Virgin), Mike Toolan (Key 103) and Jon Cotton.
Some of the biggest names in the music industry including Dina Carroll, Beverly Knight, Gemini, Shirley Lewis, Kenni Thomas, Ginny, Hyper GoGo, Striker, 2Funky2, Nu Atlantic, Big Fun, Newton, Rick Astley, Take That, Byron Stingly, Angie Browne (Bizarre Inc), Nicki French, Powerhouse, Bassheads, Oceanic, Clock, Happy Clappers, Livin’ Joy.

During the last 10 years the club has established itself as one of the most popular nightclubs on The Wirral. As we entered the 21st Century the club was redeveloped all over again.

Ambitious planning saw the transformation of the basement; including the building of an impressive new conservatory, plus a new reception and main floor so once again revolutionizing clubbing on The Wirral.
