About Me

After my beautiful excursion into americana on BOTTLE OF THE PAST and the unplugged storyteller style on PICTURE THIS, I have returned to my euro elektro pop roots as my songs HAPPINESS and BRILLIANT MOMENT indicate. My musical endeavors seem to lead me back and forth between the pensive songwriter, the extroverted singer/frontman and the primal feeling of being a strong and consistent timekeeper. All three activities are quite different in nature yet I am equally drawn to them. Over the past few years I've played numerous shows leading my own projects as well as playing drums with a variety of wonderful artists such as Roland Gift (Fine Young Cannibals), Adrienne Pierce, Coco Love Alcorn, Jim Byrnes, Chin, Thor, Adam Woodall, Rick Taylor, Sara Lynn, Kelly Brock, Beverly Staunton, Sabrina Korva, Brickhouse (Yale Hotel house band), Soulstream (Funk Supergroup and Bar None house band). I also recorded a live album with Harpdog Brown which was nominated for a Juno Award. I am currently performing in and around Vancouver with my trio called Vincent's Ear, as well as teaching, writing and freelancing. And last but definitely not least living in Vancouver with my cute little family which are often being referred to as "my girls". All my songs are available at CD BABY/itunes.

Influences: My influences come from various types of writing: 1 The story song which doesn't necessarily have a chorus. Every word counts and needs to be heard. Therefore the song needs a sparse musical backdrop using very little chord movement and 3 or 4 diatonic chords. Springsteen's Nebraska album and some Randy Newman songs influenced me in that way. My songs ROBBIE from PICTURE THIS and I-5 SOUTH from BOTTLE OF THE PAST were written using that concept. 2 The straight up pop song with verse, chorus and maybe a bridge, using richer chords and borrowing from other keys is what I love about The Beatles. My song BRILLIANT MOMENT is written in that way. 3 As a drummer I started out listening to Stewart Copeland and The Police and only later realized what an amazing singer-songwriter Sting is. There is always a high level of musicianship and great songwriting to be found on his albums. 4 The crystal clear lyrics by Cole Porter sung by Frank Sinatra is another thing I really love. Frank phrases his lines like a great horn player and sings the lyrics as if they were his own, much like an actor playing a convincing part. These are the writers I have studied more extensively but of course there are many more that I draw from. I find it helpful to look at the complete catalog of one artist to find the reoccurring themes and the "common denominator" of all their songs. That way it is easier for me to find their idiosyncrasies and their general approach to songwriting. Sorry for all the shop talk but I love talking about this stuff. the story behind BRILLIANT MOMENT

This song was written during my long and most of the time hopeless search for a partner. I had come home from the bar and had met someone that I seemed to connect with. I felt young like a teenager an...

the story behind HAPPINESS

I don't know if you have ever tried to console someone that has been left by their partner. It is a sensitive task in which you have to tread carefully yet at the same time underline the finality of i...

the story behind BLUEBERRYMAN

Sometimes when my family went on road trips, my mom and I liked to imagine what it would be like to live in a house in the particular region we were driving through. Sometimes our travels would ...

the story behind BOTTLE OF THE PAST

I got the idea for this title from a Hermann Hesse novel. I always could identify with his characters and often felt as if it was me talking to myself. His themes of loneliness and existentialism I co...

THERE'S A SONG IN EVERYTHING. Welcome to my songwriting blog

I have always enjoyed artists speaking about their work and how it came about. The behind the scenes footage of movie making. The stories behind the songs and the mystery of the creative process...
