BIO
2000 - The Birth And the Consequences
The situation at the turn of a new millennium in Järvenpää, in the Delta at the northern end of Lake Tuusula, Finland: a band called Foot had been put to rest, as Oinasmaa had gone to Scotland in the end of 1999. Luomanen, Hartonen, and Hytönen formed Pohjoinen Kuri after a few sessions of heavyish jamming. Along came drummer Laitinen, and a third guitarist, Pettersson, Hartonen's colleague. During the winter, several songs, such as Tilanne (Situation), Vuotias (One-year-old), Järkäle (Boulder), and Vuosia (Years) were given birth. The making of a demo was planned, but Laitinen's hearing-related problems would worsen so that he durst no longer batter at his canisters. Reinforcement was found in the form of Kokkinen, and the first recording was made at Soundcage studio in Kerava in April 2000. The recording contained the songs Vuotias, Tilanne, and Järkäle. As Oinasmaa returned from his "short" trip, he headed straight away to the studio to marvel at the new orchestra, participating in the background shouting of Järkäle. By summer, Hartonen had left with Pettersson and his friend towards Spain with a van equipped with guitars and beer. Reaching Germany, Hartonen was informed by Luomanen that Vuotias had been played on the radio. Scorpions, obviously, was being played inside the van. Hartonen returned to Finland a few weeks later. The rest of the party would spend the rest of the summer throwing acoustic gigs around the old continent. As the players at home grew impatient, Pettersson's return was no longer waited for - Huhtamo was recruited as the third guitarist. The rest of the year was spent playing, writing new songs: Kehässä (In the Ring), Voimasanat (Strong Words), Joutomaa (Wasteland), and Taivaantakoja (The Forgerer of the Heaven). The songs would end up in the next recording whose making process would be started in March 2001 at the notorious Peacemaker studio in Jokela.
2001 - Certainly Stumbling
By April 2001, the EP Tervanpolttajat (Tar Burners) was finished. The EP drew slight attention. The song Strong words were being played on the radio. Even gigs were discussed. However, more songs were required, and at least the following ones were written during the summer: Pohjoisväylä (The Northern Route), Sirpaleilla soitan (I Play Slivers), and Sanomatta jää (It Remains Unsaid). In November 2001, almost two years after the orchestra was formed, it rose on the stage for the first time at Cam'Elli in Riihikallio. The gig featured N:O Discipline—also known as Northern Discipline—the orchestra from whom Pohjoinen Kuri (Finnish translation of Northern Discipline) originally nicked the name from, with kind permission, of course. The second gig was on the following evening, in celebration of the birthday of Mr. Joonas Brandt, the band's trusted photographer, at Casino in Järvenpää with N:O Discipline and Denigrate. The stage appearance at the time was "certainly stumbling", leading into the first-ever backslapping.
2002 - The Great Men of the Delta
More songs were written during the winter: Kolme minuuttia (Three Minutes), Siinähän elät (There You Live!), and Ajankuva (A Sketch of the Times). A performance with famous indie band Maj Karman Kauniit Kuvat was made in April. The process of making a new recording started in May in Suomenlinna, Helsinki. In August 2002, Äijä (The Man), an EP containing the songs Ajankuva, Pohjoisväylä, and Kolme minuuttia, was finished. There were gigs at Wäiski, Semifinal, and Stella in Helsinki, and at Koboltti in Järvenpää during the end of the year. The gig in Koboltti was sold out, so some level of noticeable local popularity had been reached. The live set had also grown with the songs Jäänmurtaja (Icebreaker), Pöytä on katettu (The Table Is Set), and Isäntä (The Master of the House).
2003 - Songs for Times of Recession
The beginning of the year saw only two gigs, one in Savio, and another one—again—at Koboltti, where the first Kypäräklubi (Club Helmet) was organised in collaboration with a local metal band Azure. The Kypäräklubi-event was later to evolve into an organisation, Kypärä association, an active unit in the local musical front. In the summer, the recording of the next EP would kick off in Suomenlinna. During late summer, the orchestra would be seen playing its very first outdoor gigs at Puistorock in Järvenpää, and at Sillanalusrock (Rock-under-the-Bridge) in Loimaa. The recording of the new EP continued in the autumn, and a Let's-Make-Some-Noise-Club-gig was played at Gloria in Helsinki. The fresh EP came out in December, and was given the name Lama-ajan lauluja (Songs for Times of Recession). Included were the songs Maa kaatuu (The Country Is Collapsing), Jäänmurtaja, Pöytä on katettu, and Isäntä. The EP was well received, and in the end of the year the orchestra performed at the anti-warmongering "Rauhaa vai rautaa?" event at Vernissa in Vantaa. SubTV made an interview, and shot the gig, but due to technical setbacks the only sound on the video turned out to be but a second-lasting "snap". Thus, an appearance on television remained but a dream.
2004 - On the Road
New songs were written infrequently, but more gigs were played than in the previous years. In the summer, the festivals Jörisrock and Hukkarock were visited. Gigwise, the autumn saw a return to the capital region. In hopes of getting to play at the Provinssirock festival, the orchestra participated in "the Rock Lyric Contest ", but the outcome was a defeat in the finals in Lapua. After yet another gig at Cam'Elli, guitarist Father Hytönen decided to leave the band, in order to concentrate more intensively on his own songs and his contribution to private car traffic. The making of a new EP was started in the end of the year in Orimattila with the assistance of Aku Rannila. The last gig of the lineup was played at Wäiski, with an attendance of two people that had bought tickets: Pasi Kinnari, and Janne Joutsen.
2005 – Quiet
The new EP was finished in the spring, but as activity was otherwise somewhat frozen, the EP was not yet brought into daylight. A training session in May Day became the last one for Kokkinen and Huhtamo. The end of the year brought about mandatory planning for the future of the orchestra, leading into a recruiting campaign. Father Hytönen was replaced by Otto Kivelä, a long-time acquaintance from Dahl, the desolate site at which "the orchestral training facilities" lay. Elo, the man who had covered for Kokkinen at Jörisrock 2004, would occupy the drummer's stool. The new lead guitarist was seen in the person of Ile Hämäläinen, known from the local rock act Quiet.
2006 - Deep Ranks
The new EP was titled Syvät rivit (Deep Ranks), and it was published in March in the context of a traditional event involving "tipsy skiing", among other things. The first gig with the new lineup was also played at Club Yano, Järvenpää. Elo’s birthday was gaily celebrated at Jörisrock festival in the summer. Some other gigs were played, as well, not to mention that new, powerful songs were written and song called Kone, joka ei pysähdy (The Machine That Won’t Stop) was recorded for Kypärä Vol.3 –compilation. At the end of the year, Elo was to concentrate on his other band Fokker, and therefore the hard decision to start looking for another drummer was made. Nevertheless, the orchestra would not start ceasing production, but looking forward to following challenges. You had not seen anything yet...
