man is not fully conditioned and determined; he determines himself whether to give into conditions or stand up to them. in other words, man is ultimately self-determining ... every human being has the freedom to change at any instant.
from the naive viewpoint of a little child anything and everything that appears is believed to be real; but as the child grows older, he learns to make a distinction between appearance and reality. he finds, for example, that what appears on the other side of the looking glass is really not in front of him at all but behind him, and ... the happenings of his dreams, which seem real enough at the time, cannot be fitted into the world of his waking experience .. thus does the child quickly gain the view that things are not always what they seem.
nothing is the way we thought it was, and whatever we think we understand today will be changed to something else when looked at more closely tomorrow.
