About Me

Dance is a huge part of my life--specifically West Coast Swing (WCS). I travel anywhere from one to three weekends a month to WCS conventions around the country variously to compete, social dance, and sometimes teach (if I can fit it in... :-P ).

In prioritizing those three, I try to live by a personal motto, "I am not a dance teacher; I am a dancer who sometimes teaches". It helps me out when I get stressed about fitting teaching in between dancing, eating, sleeping, and competing... :-P

I currently compete in the highest division of competition for West Coast Swing, "Champions" (which puts me right in there with my teachers, Kyle Redd and Sarah Vann Drake...who can way kick my ass--most of the time, heh heh).

Here's a video of a friend, Giovanna, and I dancing in a "Champions Strictly Swing" division ("Strictly Swing" means that we get to choose our partner, but not our music--it's all improvised as the song plays...):

To see it bigger, go to the actual YouTube page ( new window ).

For more about WCS, my teaching, and implicitly about me, check out my West Coast Swing page ( new window ).

Favorite quotes: "Every person, all the events of your life are there because you have drawn them there. What you choose to do with them is up to you." (Richard Bach, Illusions) "You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true. You may have to work for it, however." (Richard Bach, Illusions)

My Interests

West Coast Swing, spirituality, my Calling(s), Renaissance Faires, movies! Conservation/Environmental stewardship, wildlife conservation/stewardship ..., pools, hot tubs, The Cliffs (in La Jolla, CA), sunsets, the water, the sun, warm breezes, summer, the girls of summer, women who dance, women who are comfortable in their skin, women who..., well, women. Oh, and singing...maybe I'm good, maybe I'm not...but it's fun!

Stuff I'm interested in, but don't know enough about: singing (I was in a Gospel Choir once...sang bass...Not sure if I'd fit better there or in Baritone, but... see? that's where knowing more + technique would be cool), performance driving, kung fu (I learned a tiny bit of Choy Li Fut), archery, horseback riding, sea kayaking, ...

I'd like to meet:

Cool people.... and maybe specifically about the dating side of things....

Dancer (West Coast Swing would be really helpful), bubbly, positive, sensual, sexy, HOT (:-) , irreverent, conscientious, intelligent, thoughtful, nurturing, supportive, cute, petite, mischievous, grounded, open-minded, a sense of wonder and possibilities, a sense of spirituality, quiet, boisterous, vocabulary, ...

Music:

A song here, a song there--kinda hard to pin down generalities these days... If it's good WCS music, it's probably in there. Pop, some R&B, *some* blues, some New Age, some 80s, Lord of the Dance!! :-) , symphonic soundtrack-stuff, oooohhh, the Conan the Barbarian Soundtrack (Basil Poledouris puts out some good stuff...'course, so does John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, and James Horner), Celtic music (esp, the quick, fun, happy stuff!), bluegrass, ... Specific artists with songs I like? James, The Alarm, U2, Erasure, REM, Crash Test Dummies (especially their "Ghosts That Haunt Me" album; now there's a singer with a deep voice...Just right for me to match), Black Eyed Peas, John Mayer, Jack Johnson, David Gray, Pussycat Dolls, Lifehouse, The Fray, the Waifs, The Calling, The Wallflowers, Mindi Abair, Celine Dion, Loreena McKennit, Golden Bough, Enya, compilation "The Narada Collection vol. 1", Matchbox 20, Eva Cassidy, Oingo Boingo (a few classic songs..."We Close Our Eyes", "Dead Man's Party", and the like), ... heh... yeah, no particular order there.

Addenda: Les Miserables (Javert....another deep voice)

Movies:

Dead Poets Society, Lord of the Rings, Sneakers, Armageddon, Pirates of the Caribbean (1 and 2), The Princess Bride, Bad Boys (1 and 2 :-) ), X-Men (1, 2, 3), The Fifth Element, The Italian Job, Star Wars/Empire/Jedi, Conan the Barbarian, Spiderman 2 (& 1), Batman Begins, Fools Rush In, Ladyhawke, The Usual Suspects (clever clever...), The Girl Next Door, The Last Samurai, The Incredibles, Van Wilder, Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle, Zorro the Gay Blade, Condorman, hmmmmm......

Lotsa other fantasy stuff... Harry Potter is light fun, and the Shannara series (original trilogy, esp.) is fun and classic. Some sci fi, too: hard SF is cool when there's enough cool characters in it... Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow series

Heroes:

Richard in _Illusions_, Spiderman, Capt. Jean-Luc Picard (yes, of Star Trek ;-) ), ...I'll think of more.

A light against apathy, desperation, and inertia....

One of the most powerful aspects of music is its ability to inspire... ...rather, to provide a hook by which we inspire ourselves. A current favorite is a song by The Calling, titled, "Our Lives".&n...
