His singles are fueled by undeniably sexy, upbeat urban/dance-pop cleverness. His performances are driven by his matinee-idol good looks, hot dance moves and rich, powerful vocals. He’s a songwriter and performer on par with the likes of Justin Timberlake, Robin Thicke and Daniel Bedingfield, delivering the kind of hooks and beats that have made those touchstones worldwide superstars. Brian Anthony is next in line.
Recently, Brian joined forces with producer/writer Big Ed Moore of E-Team Productions. Moore is best known for his work with Paula Cole (on the “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone†dance remix which charted at 3 on Billboard’s Dance chart) and Jewel (on her “Edge of Seventeen†dance remix). Big Ed and Brian co-wrote the attitude-driven club single “Come and Get Itâ€, which was subsequently co-produced and mixed by industry veteran Jeff Vincent (credits include Madonna, Backstreet Boys, Robert Palmer, Brooke Allison, Tony Danza Talk Show). The final product gave Brian his biggest break to date – placement alongside the Grammy-winning Black Eyed Peas in 20th Century Fox’s animated feature “Garfield 2: Tail of Two Kitties.â€
But that placement goes beyond just having a song in the movie: Brian and his video for the track are showcased in the DVD’s Special Features section. That feature led to a European label deal for the “Come and Get It†single. By the end of 2006, the single climbed to the 13 spot on Spain’s Top 20 Singles Sales charts – all within the first two weeks of release. The single was also released in Italy, Russia and South Africa. The song’s video is airing worldwide.
The San Francisco native has always been driven when it comes to making music. As a child, he was playing popular pop radio hits on the piano by ear – fooling friends and piano teachers into thinking he knew all of the notes. By age 13, he got his parents’ permission to work part-time at the a small town yogurt shop in order to save money for his first studio recordings. In fact, he would literally sign over each paycheck to a local producer to cover his studio time. Those long hours in the studio taught Brian the fundamentals of recording – and the studio soon became his second home.
Before long, Brian began formal piano lessons, and added vocal training and musical theater to his schedule. Soon, he had an agent and was auditioning regularly for commercials and small film roles. It was a chance victory in a contest sponsored by NBC’s Saturday morning Name Your Adventure program that catapulted Brian into the big leagues. That win gave him a chance to write a song with Boyz II Men on-the-spot in front of news cameras and network professionals. The resulting tune – “Save Me From The Pain†– aired across the nation and solidified Brian’s reputation as one of the country’s most promising young pop songwriters. It was just the beginning.
Since relocating to Los Angeles, Brian has made a mark for himself in the pop scene – not only for “Garfield 2†but for a single called “Champion†which became the theme song at the 2005 Special Olympics Summer Games. The song was released on iTunes, where it caught the attention of corporate giant--Wal-mart. They then licensed the ballad and used it in a campaign for its worldwide internal company conferences designed to motivate employees and revamp their global image.
For Brian, the success of “Come and Get It†has only whet his appetite. His live performances are the real thing. Tempered by his musical theater background, Brian gives 150% to his show – complete with backing dancers and a more intimate acoustic set. He’s also a fixture in the studio, where he is constantly crafting new songs. The songwriting process for Brian is always an adventure:
“For me, there is never an exact formula. It just depends on what the song is asking for,†he explained. “If it’s a dance track, usually the lyric and melody come first, and are born from a hot beat. But if it’s an intimate ballad, I sit down at the piano and just start playing and singing-- and somehow the lyrics just evolve from the simplicity of that alone. Sometimes songs come in ten minutes, sometimes it’s two days.â€
Brian’s success in Europe has led to interest in full album deals from both independent and major record labels alike. It is now clear to the world Brian is a triple-threat: a songwriter/producer, performer and stage presence who has managed to successfully combine his passions into a powerhouse package.
