I was born Knute Rokne in Voss, Norway but emigrated while still a child to Chicago, Illinois. I was the laboratory assistant to Julius Arthur Nieuwland at Notre Dame, but rejected further work in chemistry after receiving an offer to coach football. During my 12 years of coaching I compiled a record of 105 wins, 12 losses and 5 ties; 6 National Championships to go with 5 undefeated seasons.
