At the end of the 19th century Pomeranians were brought to America. They were first exhibited in 1892 in New York. Eight years later the breed was recognized by the AKC. US breeders continued to multiply the Pomeranian's color patterns. Red Pomeranians, most commonly seen dogs at the beginning of the century, had to make room for cream and parti-colored ones. The Pomeranian is a compact, short-backed, active toy dog. He has a soft, dense undercoat with a profuse harsh-textured outer coat. His heavily plumed tail is set high and lies flat on his back. He is alert in character, exhibits intelligence in expression, is buoyant in deportment, and is inquisitive by nature. The Pomeranian is cocky, commanding, and animated as he gaits. Pomeranians are used primarily as companion dogs. They are said to deal better with elderly people, and older children. These tiny dogs demand careful treatment, and tend to be snappy when someone hurts them, even if it is unintentionally.
