Band Members:What's Up With...S-Dot?by Steve VolkReal name: Sean Francis Age: “Way past 21.”Hometown: Southwest Philly. Background: Supplied beats for Jay-Z, Kobe Bryant/Beyoncé and Beanie Sigel, along with a host of local artists including Reed Dollaz and Eliot Ness.Current project: Shawshank Redempsean, Vol. 1, a mixtape featuring Jay-Z, Peedi Peedi, Freeway, Nola and Bun B., among others. ADVERTISEMENTThe purpose: “I been home from California for, like, four years. And I never really solidified myself in my hometown. I usually went from Cali to New York, doing things for other people. So I figured, why not put out a mix CD? It’s a big accomplishment for me. There are some skits on there. I phone-punk Jadakiss and make him think I’m Bill Cosby. I phone-punk Bernard Hopkins and make him think I’m DMX. I wanted to let my comedic side come out.”On Philly’s hip-hop scene: “I think all the rappers should start concentrating on making songs and not really worry about this battle rap that’s going on, because songs are what gets you signed. It’s good to battle, but after a while that’s all it is—just a battle. I want my Philly artists to make songs. The advantage the South has right now is that they’re not afraid to dance and have fun. Philly is an old industrial town, and we’re hard. We don’t jump around in clubs. We stand still. I think we need to make songs, and I’m the man for it.”On Beanie Sigel: “Beanie Sigel has been my sole support throughout my career. He’s like my brother, my uncle, my dad and my best friend rolled into one.”On Jay-Z: “Working with Jay-Z was probably the best experience in my life. I was in Sony Music Studios on Colorado Avenue in Los Angeles and Jay-Z walked in. I had a partner at the time named Russel Howard, and Jay-Z said, ‘Let me hear what you got.’ So we did a beat for him live in the studio. I was on keyboards, and he says, ‘I’ll be back in 15 seconds.’ He comes back in with the guy who was Def Jam’s vice president at the time and he says, ‘Yo, these guys are hot. Do that again.’ And that became the track ‘S. Carter.’”
