"i got that cocaine rap to keep you up all night"
To know Me is to Love Me.
MARQUEZ-pronunciation key-[mahr-kez]- est.1985, San Fernando Valley,Ca.
Born to first generation Mexican-American parents in the City of Los Angeles suberb of Sun Valley,California, Marquez was exposed to HipHop music by his older brother at a young age. First being influenced to man the turntables himself, he picked up the hobby of *trying* to crossfade vynil on his brothers decks by age 10. Though the first few years of his life was spent growing up in Sun Valley, it was his parents tumultuous marriage that led to constant relocation within the San Fernando Valley. Between numerous homes in Pacoima, Sylmar, Granada Hills, and at one point Reseda, there was always a home found with his Grandparents in the heart of the San Fernando Valley, the City of San Fernando (South Brand Blvd, 600 block). Minutes north of Downtown Los Angeles, it was here that (then 8 year old) Marquez would find a permanent home with his grandparents and mother. It was also by this time that he discovered and enjoyed listening to a wide array of artists such as Tupac,Cypress Hill, Nas, Dj Quik, The Notorious BIG, and of course-west coast pioneers N.W.A.,using the music as a form of expression and escape from the troubles at "home". When asked about his first experience with hiphop, he responds:" I remember my dad picking me up one day to take me out for the day, kinda as some visitation type shit. . .and he took me to the Glendale galleria. We did the same regular father son shopping thing, and I convinced him to buy me a copy of Eazy-E's "real muthafuckin g's" at tower records on the way home. As we made our way back up the 5 freeway, we put in the cd and he immediately threw it out the window somewhere near the Osborne exit. Thats when i knew that rap was something i was going to be into forever." With the tragic passing of his father at age 15 he picked up writing poetry as an assignment from anger management therapy classes. This is when it all began. Writing poetry and rhyme schemed words soon turned into applying the words to the sounds of his guitar, and looped pieces of songs that he would record off of the radio on tape. Now approaching 22 years of age, and still residing in the San Fernando Valley,he has progressed over the past few years from recording vocals on an aiwa sound stereo, to a pc microphone, and now enjoys recording sessions in the comfort of his home or in state of the art studio setups. His 2005 single "time" was heavy on recollection of hardships and troubled teen life over a thick, choppy electric guitar sample and live drum samples with sweeping female vocals on the hook. Popular at its time of conception, it was not only a favorite on the internet (with unnoted amounts of daily downloads) but also at live shows during guerilla style performances with a live band at local shows throughout the year. Although "time" had its stay in the popularity spot of his catalog, it was 2006 single "California Way" that fully captures the sound of this young mans determination and drive to make a mark in the independant music industry. Potentially being the most "expensive" production ever in his single catalog for its samples of Gene Autry 's "San Fernando Valley", Dr. Dre's "Encore", Tupacs "California Love", The Notorious B.I.G.'s "Going Back to Cali", and as a statement in its own Marquez places a sample cut of his own work "Open letter". Relying heavy on the "DIY" (do it yourself) independant work ethic inspired by punk rock bands, he has built somewhat of a fanbase (though he prefers the term "friends" over "fans") throughout the local scene and up and down regions of the westcoast. In August of 2006 he was second on the stage billing With Bubba Sparxxx for "Lowrider Nationals" in Bakersfield,Ca. The largest gathering of the Lowrider community in the Nation, with over 20,000 people in attendance. His largest audience to date. Although he continues to perform at local shows from time to time, the current concentration within his camp is mainly focused on construction of a deep catalog of tracks to be released at a later date. "When the time is right and we feel like weve got enough material to be able to release and bounce back with follow ups, we'll release a full disk. Maybe even an ep or official mixtape project in 2007" He says. "But for now my focus is just on writing new material, doing shows, building the buzz and staying busy networking. Myspace.com has become a great tool for that kind of stuff". In January of 2007, Marquez was hand picked by BYI Entertainment to appear on a 15 minute track showcasing the best (mainstream and independant) latino hiphop artists from all across the United States. The track which will be fatured on BYI/Geffen/Interscope artist Omar Cruz' Pre-album street mixtape is scheduled for release in February/March of 2007 and will be mixed by none other than Dj SKEE.
