About Me

Hello People!! .... I can never think of anthing good to write here, so please excuse me if it doesn't make much sense: I'm Dave, as you may have noticed from my name, and i'm a man. A fact you may again have already noticed of course, but sometimes it doesn't hurt to re-iterate these things. Ok, where was I, oh yes, man, right... i currently have long brown hair (although not 80s rocker long) and a face. The face comes complete with its own nose, 2 eyes, 2 ears and all the usual requirements of an everyday mug, oooh, but with the added value of a few tasteful scars (giving it a 'weathered look'), generally a little stubble, and occasionaly complimented by an expression of dismay or bemusement. Face, name and sex obviously come hung upon one of our nearly-new (about 25 years used so far) human frames, this one happens to be tall-ish (6'2'' i believe) and relatively trim, although i haven't checked on the inside recently, so i couldn't tell you whats going on in there.
What else.. oh yeah, 'pursuits'; I'm a bit of a musician, artist, and photographer and just generaly interested in everthing. As a result (and yes, i'm blaming this on my artistic tendancies), I smoke and drink and generally don't fit into the increasingly, and somewhat scary and vacuous culture of dieting and being uber-healthy, (although i'm not fat and unhealthy either).
As for what i'm like as a person, you could say laid back, humourous, 'slightly' cynical, a good sense of irony and fairly well informed, to say anything else would be tooting my own horn more than i like to do.
I should also note that i have a strong addiction to tea and coffee, both of which consitute about 80% of my fluid intake during the course of any day, and for some reason i've become a bit of a coffee-shop fiend. Spending alot of my spare hours sitting around in them with friends loudly discussing optimistically lofty topics from the scattered papers that are strewn over our table... which in turn become covered in sugar and remnants of the cigarettes that i use to poison the aforementioned friends with! (Although not anymore because its 'illegal' to smoke indoors now, plus i'm quitting)
For some reason i enjoy watching people from the bus on my way to and fro my yawn-inducing job. I don't know why i mention that, but i guess its just a general curiosity, plus i need to find something to look at when i'm on the bus, so i suppose 'out the window' is it......sometimes it does feel a bit like being on safari though.
So just message me if you want to find out more, or just banter.

My Interests

This is an easy one, Music. Ok, what else... Well, if you want a simplified list, i'll have a shot at it, here goes...
ALWAYS: Music, Film, Philosophy, Art, Psychology (of the amateur kind), Reading in general, Photography, Newspapers, Drinking with friends, Socialising, Going Out, Staying in, Friends in general, My Band -guitar/piano/(iffy)vocals, Coffee (milk & 1) and Tea (milk only), Good food and fine wines, mostly red, although i do enjoy a decent dry white from time to time, Sushi, Other People, Not being single, Toast, Marmite, Sunshine, Parites - house beach or otherwise, BBQs, Laughing so hard i can't stand up, Chatting, Yawning, a Good Stretch, Weekends, Not Working, People Watching, Being silly, Throwing things (on occasion), ... and much much more
SOMETIMES: Tv / 'Having a drink' (i'm very sensible with it 90% of the time) / Football (soccer for those over the sea) and other assorted sports and so on.......... to be honest i'm interested in so many things its impossible to list, so i'll do a wee bit on what i have no interest in: Techno/House/Jungle/Dance music as a rule (unless i'm in a club otherwise its balls) / Religion (as a follower - i do love to discuss it though) / Celebrity Gossip Magazines and the surrounding culture ('culture vacuum' might be more accurate)..... although you just can't avoid it sometimes./ and blah blah blah..

I'd like to meet:

..YOU!!!(I think...?), SO Drop me a message if you like what you see/read and you're interesting or curious in some way. Go on... how hard is it to write a message? Especially given all this material you can use for inspiration. Theres no excuse, unless you don't dig, or you can't write. Or you're a wierdo.. if you're a wierdo, probably best to not message me, i mean, lets face it... we're not gonna be friends. Having said that, i am in fact friends with quite a few good wierdos(not bad wierdos), so probably just best to make a guess as to whether we'll 'get on' before you message me.. I can be a right wierdo sometimes

However, other than other My-Spacers.....If you can picture a dinner party... Tom Waits, Kurt Vonnegut, Michel de Montaigne, Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Chris Morris (British satirist), Charles Darwin, Wassily Kandinski, Bill Hicks, Milan Kundera, Trey Parker & Matt Stone, and perhaps Bill Murray and Larry David. I'm sure theres more, but the mind goes blank sometimes y'know... (and yes i am aware that some of these people are dead, and that it would have to be a large dinner table).

..

Music:

Just about everything, at the moment though i'm listening to (in no order); Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Buddy Guy, Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, Dr John, Led Zep, Randy Newman, The Smiths, The Cure, King Creosote and the Fence Collective (scottish bunch), The Band, The Ramones, Leadbelly, The Doors, Sublime, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Lightnin' Hopkins, The White Stripes, Manu Chao, Professor Longhair, Keb Mo, Creedence C.R., Louis Armstrong, Joni Mitchell, John Lee Hooker, OCS, Talking Heads, Amos Lee, The Small Faces, Sex Pistols, Steve Earl, The Rolling Stones, John Cale, Ry Cooder, Captain Beefheart, Beck, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Cash, Pink Floyd, Rory Gallagher, Supergrass, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Muddy Waters, Rev. Gary Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Brendan Benson, Nick Drake, Screamin Jay Hawkins, Neil Young, Cat Stevens, T-Rex, Mavis Staples, Marvin Gaye, Micheal Jackson (old stuff only), Metallica (ditto), Mississippi John Hurt, Odetta, Bessie Smith, Miles Davis, Gomez, Elizabeth Cotton, Bill Withers, Guns n' Roses, The Who, Velvet Underground, Howlin' Wolf, Iggy Pop(and Stooges), The Beatles, Primal Scream, John Martyn, Otis Redding, Clapton, The Roots, Jurassic 5, Rahzel, Frank Zappa, Josh White, Son House, The Jam, The Zutons, Portishead, The Pixies, Rage Against The Machine, The Eels, James Brown, Pearl Jam, Brian Wilson, The Clash, Weezer, Jeff / Tim Buckley, The Flaming Lips, Anthony and The Johnsons, Devendra Banhart, Run DMC, B.B. King, Duke Ellington, Skip James, Black Keys, Nick Cave, Buffy St. Marie, Jolie Holland, Sufjan Stevens, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blind Willie Johnson, Gillian Welch, Ray Lamontagne, Daniel Johnson, Nina Simone, Isobel Campbell, Michael Franti, Vetiver, Adem, Palace Brothers, Sixto Rodriguez ... well it goes on and on, but these are the current playlist. In short, just about everything, most of which ain't on this rudimentary list! And anything that is good. Simple as that.

Movies:

Lots. More than i could possibly begin to list. Mainly the good ones. Many bad ones too though. Anything, and everything, but I'm not going to compile a list. Although i will give honourable mention to 'Withnail and I', 'The Big Lebowski' and 'Star Wars' (origs only) because i can, and have watched them repeatedly for years. And i suppose the same is true of the Southpark movie. (Satire at its best.) Also i've been watching alot of Japanese/ Chinese/ S.Korean/ Thai horror and action flicks recently too.. Most notably being anthing with Tony Jaa, Ong Bak and Warrior King for instance. And 'My Name is Joe' is fucking powerful and is probably the best film ever made with anyone Scottish in it. Probably.

Television:

Southpark, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Trailer Park Boys, Family Guy, Spaced, The Day To Day, Brass Eye, Alan Partridge, the Simpsons (obviously), Oz, Peep Show, The Sopranos, Big Train, The Wire, Deadwood, Father Ted, Seinfeld and so on and so on. But i don't watch much really, and these are mostly on dvd because i never make a point of watching anything when its actually on and adverts irritate the hell outta me. Also 99.8% of tv is not worth my time. Life is too short to be boring and its also alot like tv... except incomparably better, as are books and music.
That point being made, i am in fact somewhat of a hypocrite as i'm a dick about Big Brother and tend to just watch it unashamedly and obsessively when its on, and i've also been known to veg infront of any old shit like Wife Swap, America's Next Top Model, Road Wars (always support the guy trying to get away!), Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, Hells Kitchen, The X Factor (on occasion.. i know, i hate it too, but i'm a total whore like that), and the like....
"One of the few good things about modern times: If you die horribly on television, you will not have died in vain. You will have entertained us." Kurt Vonnegut

Books:

'Fahrenheit 451' by Ray Bradbury / 'The Short History of Progress' by Ronald Wright / 'Slaughterhouse 5' ~ 'Breakfast of Champions' ~ 'Cat's Cradle' (I can't decide) by Kurt Vonnegut / L.O.T.R. / 'His Dark Materials' Trilogy by Phillip Pullman / 'The Princess Bride' by William Goldman / 'Straw Dogs: Thoughts on Humans and Other Animals' by John Gray / 'A Streetcar Named Desire' by Tennesee Williams(play) / 'Day of The Triffids' By John Wyndham / 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' ~ 'Ignorance' ~ 'The Joke' (i really can't decide!) by Milan Kundera / 'The Shining' by Steven King / ' Life After God' by Douglas Copeland for a start... and anything written by Charlie Brooker!
..and my ex did make me read all the Harry Potters... and they are good i'll admit, albeit grudgingly...

Heroes:

... if you want to call them that then i suppose independent, analytical thinkers. Waits n' Dylan, and Bill Hicks for definate, as well as Larry David. Jeff Bridges in 'Lebowski' i guess. And my late friend Ben.
