About Me

Part-time tool of the man, part-time teacher of the unteachable, and full-time starving artist. I just presented at a Career Day and felt like such a sham. What's a nice way of saying, "Kids, if you want to be an artist, you have to have like 8 jobs"?I also sell stuff on my neglected etsy site - Veronica Press . There's cooler stuff on flickr . Yeah, I have a lot of jobs.

My Interests

Making stuff, all kinds of stuff. I've had to put the sewing on hold, but I still make weird board games out of hand-printed, hand-made paper. They're still a little too pricey for your average board game enthusiast and galleries don't know what the hell to do with them, but they're fun to play. I'm also working on new series of drawings featuring maternity corsets from the 1930's - hot. The Spinster Quilt is also high on the priority list. I'm always making books, prints, and crafts or thinking about making books, prints, and crafts. So many things to make, so little time. Perhaps I should develop a speed habit.

I'd like to meet:

People who want to give me money to make art, ne'er do wells, and people backwards enough to care about the words "vandercook", "charles brand", and "handmade", not necessarily in that order.

Music:

My iPod just broke, so I've been rocking out to old cassettes and demos on my 1980's Nakamichi cassette deck. Some favorites are old gems like Sliang Laos, Inquisition, Stopgap Measure, and More Fire for Burning People, plus a few mixtapes from former creepy stalkers. God, I love cassettes. I also discovered that a Blackberry Pearl can be an iPod substitute with some shitty earbuds and fewer features. Whatever, it means I can listen to mp3's again. Viva technology or something.

Movies:

Yes. Movie theaters have A/C.

Television:

Flight of the Conchords. Gilmore Girls. Degrassi: the Next Generation. I love that angsty teen crap.

Books:

Obstetrics manuals, first aid books, and Girl Scout handbooks. I also can't get enough non-fiction about death and food. Stiff and The Botany of Desire are in the top 10.

Heroes:

My heroes are my friends who are making and doing amazing things on their own terms. People who had the balls to start their own businesses or try to make money doing what they love - building custom furniture, owning a feminist sex shop, writing books, drawing comics, teaching, making art, playing music. Those are my heroes.
