ORIOL MAYMO
(Bass Guitar)
I was born in Barcelona (Catalonia, Spain) in 1976. I guess it would be a torture to anyone to start my life's tale from so far behind, so I'll get to the point. My playing the bass started as a high school passion. At that time I listened to bands like Primus and Red Hot Chili Peppers, and also classics like James Brown.
When watching other bands, I remember nobody gave much notoriety at the soft spoken guy playing quietly at one end of the stage with a ..guitar with less strings... To me, it was fascinating the way a good bass player would help the rest of the band build the song. Therefore, buying myself a bass became my main objective in life. It was a difficult enterprise: I had no money and my parents though, of course, that my feelings about it would go away in a couple of months. At that time, I remember myself dreaming of a bass like the one Alex (the member of the Altafulla's rock band Sarau Nocturn) played. Finally, I saved enough to buy it. It was an active Samick that I still have, well preserved, at home. I played daily at maximum amplifying capacity for a whole year for which, by the way, I would like to send a message of profound thankfulness to all my neighbours. They had tons of patience and never said a single word about it.
After a few years, I was able to buy my second bass: a Washburn B-20. It's a beauty from 1982 that I was able to acquire at a very reasonable price in a store that found it forgotten in a dusty corner. I call this being lucky. It followed me around through many sleepless nights of music until I had enough money to buy the ..Ferrari.. of bass players: a Music Man StingRay. I was as happy as anybody could be when I had it in my hands at the store. I believe I did not stop smiling and playing for two whole weeks.
My music taste has not changed much through the years. I would say it has widen more than it has changed. Each moment in life needs its special kind of music and it is always good to have open horizons ready. I would recommend everybody to have in its collection, though, a disc from Ben Harper, Pearl Jam, Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and, of course, KENNEL!
I hope you will enjoy our web site and hope as well to see you soon at our concerts!!
JORDI FIGUERES
(Drums)
I represent the loudest part of the band: the drums player. I was born in Torredembarra (Catalonia, Spain) 29 years ago and I had an early start in the music world due to the influence of my uncle, Pere Papiol. He was the bass player of a band called Freebird, one of the best-known formations in Tarragona at the end of the 80's and during the 90's.
In those times, though I was still quite young, I always enjoyed playing a few notes in the Jazz Bass that my uncle still has somewhere around, and it is for this reason that, in parallel to the drums in KENNEL, I play bass in another band.
It all started the first time I watched the Freebirds play. I understood then that playing the drums was going to be my biggest passion. Also, this felling increased by listening to bands that were big in those days, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and a long etcetera.
My beginnings were a bit complicated. I started at 16 and hiding all activity from my parents, who prohibited me all contact with the musical world (today they are as happy as they will be). I then learned to play by heart (never took classes), using self-made instruments out of cork, plastic and iron. Of course, it was everything except music. Then, a good friend from Altafulla, Jordi Vidal, lend me a whole set of Strong drums, etc. to be able to practice hand-feet coordination and to construct new patterns which before I never thought I could play.
I also learned a few tricks thanks to Juanito, a good friend and the drums player of Freebird. My first 18' crash Paiste 1000 seemed to me spectacular when I bought it from him, with an especially dedicated loud session from my parents. Little by little, and with a bit of effort, I went from second hand medium level material to my actual Zildjian excellent crashes and splashes. The change was revolutionary, but I was still without the complete set.
At the end of the 90's, when I was playing with the band Highleaf (Joan, Oriol, myself and Isaac Negrié as the lead voice), I was lucky enough to enjoy Tama drums for a while, thanks again to Jordi Vidal (drums player of the band Sarau Nocturn).
Today I have my own quality material, finally! See if you like it! Love to all.
JOAN RUBINAT
( Guitars & Lead Vocals)
Hello, my full name is Joan Rubinat González and I was born in Altafulla (Catalonia, Spain) in 1978.
I truly don't remember the first time I had a guitar in my hands! Who cares about my first time!
To me, the important thing is how much I love music, by which I live fascinated. I love all varieties and styles, from classic to the most hard core (except, of course, the same dumb Summer hit that comes up every year to make a little money). Regardless of the song, I invariably feel attracted to its melody, which helps me understand a lot better the concepts and histories behind it.
I don't remember the first time I had a guitar in my hands but I do remember my beginnings, my first notes trying to imitate Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Lemonheads... I was in a different World listening to all those people, listening to their guitars with so much ..feeling.., always ready to recharge my batteries!
Looking at it with perspective, I still think those years had a strong influence in my style; in my way of understanding music.
What else can I tell you? Each and everyone of us have left our little grain of salt in this, our common project: KENNEL. Lots of excitement, feeling and hard work to try to send our musical themes out towards people like you.
Well, now I'll continue my listening of Coldplay and Dave Matthews Band... Enjoy our music. Cheers!
