SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2006 has drawn to a close, celebrating its 6th birthday with many magical musical moments. Organisors would like to praise the 17,500 strong audience for their largely sunny disposition and friendly camaraderie during the two day camp fest.
Due to overnight rain, there were delays opening gates. We thank all our patrons for their patience. Once we were up and running, the new personalised ticketing system was a smashing success.
The TENT OF MIRACLES stage performed weddings, baptisms, exorcisms and the odd confession and the WORKSHOP AND PERFORMANCE STAGE saw the whacky and the wonderful.
The inaugural G.W MCLENNAN Theatre stage proved to be a smashing success with numerous artists from BOB EVANS and CLARE BOWDITCH to MOGWAI , JOSE GONZALEZ and AUGIE MARCH filling the new space to capacity.
On Saturday, TV ON THE RADIO played an astonishing set while New York guitar heroes SONIC YOUTH blazed their way through a headline set that capped off day one in the Super Top. Meanwhile DJ SHADOW , PAUL MAC , and THE AVALANCHES had punters in the Mix Up tent dancing up a storm.
The Sunday line-up was tremendous from THE ZUTONS and YOU AM I to SNOW PATROL , YEAH YEAH YEAHS and a welcome return by mystery band THE VINES who played a scorching set their first major Australian festival performance since 2003 Homebake. WOLFMOTHER electrified the audience in the Mix Up tent and SCISSOR SISTERS delivered a set of high camp pop tunes and previewed new material from their forthcoming album.
The legendary BRIAN WILSON and his extraordinary band delivered the sing-along set of the event, entrancing a multi generational audience with hit after hit after hit ending with the beautiful Love and Mercy.
And so it is that SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS has wrapped up for another year. Weve loved it and hope our audience did too.
Wed like to thank the majority of our patrons for embracing the event in the spirit in which its intended. Well see you next year.
