About Me
Rollektrik City - Interview of Trip the Tekkno
What do you have when you mix together a kid with roller-blades, a funky beat, with a electric-hard synth, backed by a creamy pad, dashed with some retro noise, following a distinct taste of bass, layered with some strings attached, and topped off with bells and effects that makes you’re mind wonder?? You have a recipe for a "rolling" disaster served crazy by Trip the Tekkno himself. From making you sweat on the dance floor to relaxing in the basement, Trip creates the atmosphere and magnifies it well. Escaping boundaries and always cross-mixing genres, you’ll never know what this eclectic Musician sound like next.
Trip’s avant-garde production skills can be traced back to his early childhood. At the age of 6, he began listening to more Alternative/Punk Music instead of all the mainstream Rap/Hip-Hop that was popular in his time. “I enjoy real Hip-Hop to the fullest, but there was something about it that wasn’t my tasteâ€, he says. One late Saturday night, Trip turned on the radio and heard this unknown sound that was quite appealing to him. He would later find out that he was listening to…you guessed it, Techno. Dabbing through the radio, internet, and Music television channels, he learned that that “sound†he heard wasn’t too popular in his area. “I learned through research it was Euro Techno and it’s not too popular down here [in Houston].†That didn’t stop him from not creating it himself.
After years of listening to everything from Funky House to Trip-Hop, Trip decided to conquer the task of making his own sound. “Daft Punk’s “One More Time†was my inspiration. That song made you feel feelings to didn’t think you have and Gorillaz “Clint Eastwood†was the icing on the cakeâ€, he says. Trip’s first attempt to become Musically proactive was to get a keyboard. After playing on his cousin’s keyboard, he was actually derailed from playing it. “I can’t stand it!! It made me mad at times, but I still wanted to do itâ€. During his Middle schools years, he heard some different kind of Electronica. Songs with actual Electric guitars in it. Basement Jaxx, Groove Armada, and Felix the Housecat to name a few. Still, Trip the Tekkno had no recording programs nor any instruments at this time. So what’s the most strategic move you can make to play an instrument, expand your Music knowledge, and do it all for free at the same time?? Join your School’s Marching Band.
During his Sophomore year, Trip joined Evan E. Worthing’s Marching 100. “That had to the best thing that has ever happened to me in my life so far!!†he exclaimed with a bright smile on his face. He joined the Band’s drum section and took on the Tenor drum with shady results. “I like the drums a lot, but I was still yearning to play guitar. Besides, I didn’t think playing that drum would be so difficultâ€. After 3 years of playing Tenor drum, Trip’s Band years come to a close. “I was quite sad not because I was graduating, but I still had no programs, no guitar, no nothing. It was all in all a good experience though and I wouldn’t trade it for anythingâ€. As a firm Christian, Trip truly believes “Everything happens for a reasonâ€. During an Economics lecture, him and his close friend Lauren was talking and a Music conservation came up. Not only that, but she gave him a door of opportunity and a key to unlock it. “She said it was called Fruity Loops and I laughed at first, but she told me what it does and she was able to get it for me!!â€
It was now his time to shine and so far, so good. After doing some “postal service†cameo’s, beat production, group work, and compilation appearances in the past year, Trip the Tekkno is now on the verge of making a wonderful name for himself not only as an Musician, but as a true fan of the Art. What can we expect from this fresh talent in the future?? “Honestly, there’s a lot of my mind and many different directions I can go. I’m currently trying to piece together some projects as well as my Independent studio, but I won’t leave you all in suspense much longerâ€. Truly a work of art. Look forward to hearing and seeing Trip the Tekkno soon.
