Founded in 1919, Halliburton is a multinational corporation with operations in over 120 countries. It is based in Houston, Texas. Halliburton operates two major business segments: The Energy Services Group provides technical products and services for oil and gas exploration and production, and the KBR subsidiary is a major construction company of refineries, oil fields, pipelines, and chemical plants.
However, Houston-based Halliburton differs from many corporations, in that its profits are generated directly from war. Halliburton and its subsidiary KBR, formerly known as Kellogg, Brown and Root, have played integral parts in the destruction, occupation and reconstruction of Vietnam, Panama, Bosnia, Kosovo and Iraq. Their current drive to privatize the occupation and reconstruction of Iraq has led to the death of thousands of innocent Iraqis, hundreds of US and coalition soldiers and many of their own employees.
In 2002, Houston based energy services company Halliburton began to recevie billions of dollars in contracts from the Defense Department for operations in Iraq in anticipation of the US invasion and occupation. When the US war in Iraq began in 2003, a variety of campaigns (made up of journalists, legislators and anti-war and global justice activists) began in hopes of holding Halliburton and it's numerous subsidiaries accountable.
