"For those who can dig a good funk, be sure to give John-a-Dreams a listen. A four-piece ensemble of drums, bass, guitar, and keyboard, these guys meander through a variety of genres, from funk/boogie/jazz to mystical jams to epic-style compositions. Radically different from the usual amalgam of radio-style rock riffs and stock lyrics, John-a-Dreams's music seems to draw as much from gospel and showy blues as it does from classical rock stylings.
The keyboardist, Doug Carter, tickles the ivories with jazzy chords and melodies, alternating between synthetic sounds and more conventional ones, such as organ and piano. Also, he belts out the lyrics, which manage to be fresh while retaining a retro-rock feel. The guitarist, Jason Takaki, keeps solid time with his riffs, and bassist Edwin Porras holds down the deep tones with some funky bass work. And behind it all is the solid drumming of Chris Schultz, who manages some complex rhythms without overwhelming the overall sound of the band.
The members of John-a-Dreams have been practicing together since October 2004, and they obviously enjoy what they're doing. They've got three recorded songs, available on both their Myspace site and their band website, www.john-a-dreams.com. The tracks are entitled "Yoga Groove," "Full Closet, Empty Person," and "Gone" (sic). If you want to hear a really fresh song, check out "Gone;" I could imagine that baby on the radio. These guys play music that could add some spice and variety to any playbill, so make sure to watch out for their appearance." -Union Weekly (CSULB student newspaper)
