About Me

MyGen Profile GeneratorErik Mongrain - Airtap

Add to My Profile | More Videos I love Mayfield chocolate ice cream, and I'm a little lactose intolerant, so life is pretty interesting. Dr. Pepper, feta cheese, cinnamon pop tarts, chimichangas, chili dogs from the Varsity, red wine, and Irish coffee...but not all together, please. Staring at clouds, dreaming out loud, driving with reckless abandon and no direction are primary pursuits. Maps are for people without a spirit of adventure. Leading a group of 5 college students to Varna, Bulgaria, this summer for a project, and I'm completely stoked to get to see my good friends there, and spend some time at the Black Sea! I love traveling in Eastern Europe, and I'm hoping to hit South America and maybe even Africa in the next year or so. I've been working on my first book for a while, and I'm starting to wonder whether it's ever really supposed to be finished...I also am into photography and my dog Daisy, who thinks we're married (we're really not...I'm just not down with that...I've read her scripture from Leviticus about people-animal relations, but she's completely defiant). Anything outdoors is good...I'm working in Hartwell now, near the lake, so there will be much sea-dooing going on this summer! If I could figure out a way to travel full-time and get paid, I would. Love my family...they're the greatest. Fought through some hard times, but I'm still thankful. I'm the youth pastor at Crossroads Church in Athens, and hoping they'll get a chapter of Student Venture going at MCHS very soon...it's already in the works. Chaplain for the basketball team. I work for someone who clears things up with mud and cleans things up with blood, so I'm into exploring paradox and mystery. I'm working every day on changing myself, so I can help change the world."Lord, I have heard of Your fame; I stand in awe of Your deeds, O Lord. Renew them in our day, in our time make them known!"---------*Habakkuk 3:2*

My Interests

Writing (sometimes Relevant has pity on me and puts my stuff in the Revolution section), hiking & camping, feeding people who are hungry, black and white photography, Georgia football, Braves baseball, MC basketball, traveling (Ohrid, Macedonia=heaven on earth!!!), dreaming while awake, Ford Broncos (pre-1971); I enjoy loving people whom the world doesn't always do a great job of loving---people with AIDS, homeless people, drug addicts, etc. I hang out with teenagers more than I do adults, because I'm hoping I'll be able to influence one of them to change the world. I hope I live long enough to see it happen.

I'd like to meet:

I already met Bill Monroe, so that leaves Jesus, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Derek Webb, Martin Luther King, Jr., Martin Luther, Erwin McManus, Heather Zydek, Dan Haseltine, Brennan Manning, Rich Mullins, Shane Claiborne, William Barclay, Paul, Jackson Browne, Adam Sandler, Bartholomew, Andrew, Simon the Zealot, Bono, Thomas Merton, Samson, Johnny Cash, St. Clement, Metodi, and Cyril, Mary Magdalene, Lazarus, Dorothy Day, the mother of my children, Michael Stipe, Mother Teresa, Hosea, Jackie Robinson, Billy Sunday, Dan Haseltine, Drew Barrymore, Alexander the Great, people who have traveled in or are from Eastern Europe....Shelter

Music:

Derek Webb's "House Show" lives permanently in my CD player; Hillsong United, Matthew Smith/Indelible Grace, Otis Redding, Andrew Peterson, Linkin Park, Erik Mongrain, Johnny Cash, JJ Heller, The Fray, Mindy Smith, David Crowder, Damien Rice, Sandra McCracken, Amy Winehouse (I think she might be in love with me...), Ben Harper, Timbaland, Onerepublic, Jars of Clay, U2, Gillian Welch/David Rawlings, Nickel Creek, The Elms, Watermark, Smalltown Poets, Joseph Arthur, Bebo Norman, Outkast, Waterdeep, Chair & Microphone, R.E.M., Allman Brothers, Skillet, NPR on Sunday afternoons, Bob Dylan, The Beatles (early stuff), Sister Rosetta Tharpe, The Band, and of course, the imcomparable Electric Light Orchestra!!!!!!!!!

Movies:

Braveheart, because there's fire and a sword and a dirty, bleeding person on the cover...Aren't those the only movies that are really worth watching? Hotel Rwanda, Invisible Children, Lord of the Rings Trilogy, The Natural, Gladiator, Beyond the Gates of Splendor, Kingdom of Heaven, Blood Diamond, 50 First Dates and other Adam Sandler stuff, The Prestige, M. Night Shymalan stuff...

Television:

I'm really into Man Versus Wild lately---He squeezed liquid from elephant dung and drank it! I don't understand why he didn't just send his cameraman to the truck for water...Anyway, if Man v. Wild and Survivorman were dropped in the same desert, I have no doubt that Man v. Wild would skin and eat Survivorman alive, just to have enough protein to get through one day....24, Prison Break, The Simpsons, Braves baseball, European travel shows (Why does nobody ever go to Macedonia?), SNL, History Channel, Travel the Road; Univision (mostly just Sabado Gigante, and the soap operas, which I make up my own stories for, since I don't speak much Spanish) Oh, and sometimes I watch a lot of home renovation shows starring really metro carpenters....I swear, my dad was a plumber, and he never wore tight t-shirts or girl jeans while he was on the job!

Books:

The Bible (God); Mountain Singer, Better a Dinner of Herbs (Byron Herbert Reece); anything by the Fugitive Poets (if you can name three of them, I give you many cool points, and I'll buy you a coke); Cost of Discipleship, Testament to Freedom (Bonhoeffer); Lower Piedmont Country (Herman Clarence Nixon); A Wake for the Living (Andrew Nelson Lytle); Ragamuffin Gospel, Wisdom of Tenderness, Relentless Tenderness of Jesus (Brennan Manning); Irresistible Revolution (Shane Claiborne); Buck Naked Faith (Erik Sandras); anything by Erwin McManus; Story, Sailing Between the Stars (Steven James); Erskine Caldwell; William Faulkner; Georgia Stories (Augustus Baldwin Longstreet); Revolution (Heather Zydek); Our Southern Highlanders (Horace Kephart); Ravi Zacharias; The Weight of Glory (C.S. Lewis); Tolkien; Relevant Magazine; Paste...Oh, and Uncle John's Bathroom Reader (gives me lots of useless info to build sermons around...Yes, you get what you pay for when you hire a youth pastor that didn't go to seminary!)

Heroes:

Jesus, MLK, Bonhoeffer, the staff at Blood-N-Fire Ministries in Atlanta, Perry Burgess from Walk on Water in Athens, Jeff Williams, my most awesome family, Campus Crusade staffers from Macedonia, Bulgaria, and Albania (Didi, Jordan and Villi, Geri, Galin, Veli, Metodi, Lejda, and Zlatko, to name a few!)...I admire people who are willing to be rebels, turn the world upside down, and lay down their lives for a great, just, and noble cause.
