No wonder most people often snap their fingers or shake their heads when trying to think of who Beautiful Lucy’s Room sounds like. It doesn’t help that the four members all come from such divergent musical backgrounds, brought together by their love of jazz standards. In fact, the one thing musically that they have in common would be that each one owns at least one Billie Holiday album, and there’s probably Jobim and Bacharach hiding somewhere in their collection, too.
Describing themselves aptly as this century’s purveyors of ‘acoustic cabaret’ – a serendipitous and wonderfully catchy mix of traditional jazz, pop, rock, lounge and even a bit of folk and grunge thrown in that inevitably happens when four people with different musical tastes end up working together - Beautiful Lucy’s Room formed quite effortlessly, in the same way that their music nailed its niche.
Former San Francisco-based singer-songwriter Salli, influenced by female artists such as Aimee Mann and Suzanne Vega, moved back to Australia in 2005 and was looking for other musos to jam with. She didn’t have to search too far. She found guitarist Jim McGrath and ex-Satin Jazz drummer Jeff Street only a few desks away at work. Jim then roped in blood brother Ned – the two are veterans of the Canberra indie rock scene with the band Scruff Lovely.
“It was definitely meant to be,†says Salli, who grew up listening to a lot of ‘60s and ‘70s pop, Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Henry Mancini. “As soon as the four of us got together and played, there was this unmistakeable chemistry in the air. We knew right there and then that this was something that had to be taken seriously.â€
The quartet has been winning audiences with its uniquely catchy sound, leading to several packed gigs including one in front of ex-Midnight Oiler Peter Garrett.
"We’ve gotten such great feedback from our live shows, that we knew we just had to keep it going,†says Salli.
And how about this for a bit of trivia folks: Want to know where the band got its name? Beautiful Lucy’s Room is actually a real place in the Chateau du Gruyere in Switzerland.
