Figuring stuff out....

About Me

Got out of the rat-race before I ever really ran it. I've been in Taiwan for just over three years. I teach for a living but the current reason for living here is learning Mandarin; I study it at Dong Hai University, Taichung.I will return to the UK at some point. The time that could have gone into post-graduate studies is being taken up by the Chinese, so here's to the success of China, as mine is increasingly linked to that it seems. Although I do wish they would stop pointing missiles at me...Magazines make the rules to make us lose.. For your dream man, the house you could both plan. The car in the sales ad, the wet dream with a man you wished that you had.- Stereophonics

My Interests

Learning Chinese. Music.I also like; cinema; tennis; technology; world cuisine; trivia; history; theology (from an atheist perspective); sciences; beer, wine and spirits.

I'd like to meet:

A strong and painfully beautiful girl, who is my intellectual equal (Louis Vuitton owners need not apply) who I can learn about.. and who understands and loves me back. But what are the chances of that?.. So I'll settle for new friends; anyone with something honest and interesting to say. Not the usual drone or bravado.

Music:

Arctic Monkeys. Bloc Party. Blur. Coldplay. Doves. Elbow. Feeder. Gomez. Hives. Keane. Killers. Leaves. Muse. Radiohead. Snow Patrol. Thirteen Senses. Vines. White Stripes. And f*** 99% of rap music.

Movies:

Some obvious choices here, I'm afraid; "The Usual Suspects"; "The Shawshank Redemtion" etc. You really can't fault them and they deserve the hype. Being British, and having worked at Blockbuster Video in my undergrad days, I saw a load of fantastic British cinema. Obviously "Trainspotting" but also triumphs like "Brassed Off", "Rogue Trader", "Gangster Number One", "Unleashed", "Layer Cake".My favourite continental European movie to date: "Run Lola Run" (German). I also have a special place in my heart for "The Spanish Apartment" (a mixed European cast; and the languages reflect that).Best Asian film I've seen to date: "Infernal Affairs", which was recently remade in Hollywood under the name "The Departed". If you like Hong Kong cinema, and haven't seen "One Night In Monkok", you really should.

Television:

British comedy. The Mighty Boosh and The IT Crowd are the most recent ones I've seen. Any mates reading this from back there in the UK - recommendations for new stuff are always welcome.

Books:

Biographies and things that make me laugh; I bloody love Danny Wallace. Recently, I have been reading a little Edgar Allen Poe and he's excellent.

Heroes:

My friend James, who died with dignity at 23 and taught me that your young life is too precious to waste on 9 to 5, mortgages and pension plans (a very personal interpretation, as I'm very proud of our mutual friends who've worked hard and achieved precisely that).

My Blog

Hutch's Scooter

Don't let the date fool you. I'm actually writing this on January 30th, 2007. This being the first blog I've ever written, and I'm doing so to document a project I embarked on in Taichung, Taiwan, wit...
