"Free beer, Free beer for the musicians". So the shout went up across the pub. It got my attention thats for sure! And so it started. I learnt to play folk music initially for that reason (well beer is expensive in London). The first very cheap bodhran I bought nearly ended up as so many of them do, as a wall decoration. Thankfully I chanced upon a young Stefan Hannigan. With bribes of tea and toast and enough pocket money to provide his weekly bus fare we embarked on the learning process. So that our joint hangovers did not suffer too much through repetitive noise that sounded like shed building, he taught me irish whistle too.Now dangerously armed with a dead goat to hit, and a piece of central heating system to blow down, I invaded the Irish sessions of London and eventually teamed up with a bunch of renagades who called themselves Trim The Velvet. On moving to Northampton I met up with Dan Plews who foolishly asked me to come and provide some dead goat sound to Dansaul with Guy Fletcher and Saul Rose..... and guess what, Mr. Hannigan turned up again to play with us also. Now you will find me in the North West of England currently doing similar things to dead goats and central heating systems with messr's Nick Mitchell, Chris Lee and Dave Russell in Full House and on the odd occassion lending the whistlely bits to that bunch of Cheshire rednecks The Family Mahone when they have mice and rats that they need removing...Next year will hopefully see a new musical project with some new friends....more on that to come.So after meeting with and playing with so many great musicians who I am priveledge to call friends and having the opportunity to record some of my humble offerings its funny to reflect where that phrase "free beer" can actually lead.
