In an industry where bad language, guns, and violence are often glorified, hip hop has received its share of bad press for what some say has negatively influenced today’s youth. However, just as day is to night and wrong is to right, there’s always two sides to every story. Ms. Robinson, a certified math teacher born Consuelo Robinson, decided to take this new found connection between hip hop and math to the classroom by creating one of today’s fastest growing math concept “Hip-Hop Tables.â€
In June 2004, she was one of the first out of ten teachers to receive her master’s degree in Innovative Teachings in Mathematics from Nova Southeastern University, located in the heart of Davie, Florida. She used her musical background and her teaching skills to create “Hip – Hop Tables†a new mathematical break through designed to capture the attention of students while simultaneously promoting less intimidating practices in the classroom. Like many of us, Ms. Robinson recognized kids today could remember lyrics to many songs, but only apply themselves to subjects which interest them.
As a teacher in the classroom, Ms. Robinson is the 'FIRST' to write an album, which features “up-to-date, crunk-style beats,†complete with vocal effects which sound like real hip-hop songs aired on the radio. You won’t find curse words or violent lyrics in her songs. Only catchy phrases which allow you to enjoy a musical hip hop vibe with a mathematical twist that adds up. Hip-Hop Tables focuses on all the times tables from 1 through 12.
Since its release in October, 2007, it has received very positive reviews from kids who enjoy hip hop music. It has also captured the attention of the local media, several radio stations around the country, as well as a number of schools in states such as Alabama, Hawaii, and Oregon. Meanwhile, Robinson continues sharpening young minds as an Algebra teacher while perfecting her newly found talent as an educational rap artist.
“Let's bounce to education!â€
