She is a born and raised "New Yorker" and is the eldest of four children. Bernadette has a genuine passion for the sport of boxing, however she cannot remember exactly "why" she started watching it. In 2004 she decided to act on her passion and began taking lessons at the Harlem YMCA with former fighter Ed Mums and classes with David Galindez. It was not until 2005 that Bernadette attended her first live fight, one of her fellow boxing students took her to the Golden Gloves Tournament in New York: "That was my first live boxing event and it was so exciting! That night I met boxing legend Iran Barkley! I made it a point to attend the Golden Gloves Finals at Madison Square Garden and had so much fun! There I met boxer Zab Judah, it was exciting for me because this was a boxer I had seen fight on TV!" Attending the Golden Gloves was a turning point for Bernadette, it reinforced her passion for boxing and increased her enthusiasm for the sport! She watched any and all matches she could on television and began to attend more and more live fights. Her training took a turn for the worst however when she needed to have foot surgery, but her passion for boxing never faded and in January 2006 she attended the Baldomir/Judah fight at Madison Square Garden. With her foot injured, Bernadette began to use her networking skills to contact and meet anyone associated with boxing, she registered with My Space in February of 2005 and created a boxing revolution on the site! She would use My Space to locate and contact as many boxers, trainers and fans as possible. She went to many events, both amateur and professional and began to make a name for herself in the boxing world! In November of 2006 Bernadette was inspired to write about the training aspect of boxing. She had observed several boxers and their trainers but eventually decided the only way to really understand the training aspect of the sport was to experience it herself: " I was inspired to write a piece on training based on my observations of different boxers in different gyms. I thought about it and decided, who am I to speak on it if I never did it before?". So Bernadette began training at Gleasons Gym in Brooklyn New York with skilled trainer and 1992 Olympian and former South American, Carribean and Guyanese Champion, Dillon Carew. She is friendly with numerous boxers and speaks with them about boxing often, but nothing they told her could have prepared her for the work and dedication the sport requires: "I am cool with a lot of fighters, however no matter what they tell me, there are certain things that can only be understood if experienced." Bernadette is still currently training at Gleasons and is planning to compete in the Golden Gloves New York this year.Bernadette Robinson is the type of woman you want on your team. A twenty-seven year old social worker from Harlem, New York, Robinson is that smart, kind, hard-working person that everyone seems to like.Working forty hours a week, Robinson certainly has a full plate. Her job is exhausting, as from 10-6 every week day, she finds housing, doctors, and does legal work for those with HIV and AIDS. Although she loves her work, Robinson's day doesn't truly begin until the clock strikes six. Why? The woman who is referred by many boxing insiders as "The Queen", is on a mission that some say can't be accomplished. It's very ironic that someone who only two years ago was a casual fan to boxing now may be the sport's savior. Robinson..s mission is to light a spark in the boxing world and let the fire grow without end. With her weapon of choice, www.myspace.com, she could end up doing so.Myspace.com is the equivalent to internet candy -- or maybe even internet crack. The addicting website allows you to build a profile, view other profiles, add members to your friends list, contact those friends through a messaging system, and do about a million other things that help people get to know each other. The website is the sixth most popular in the world according to alexa.com, and it has been estimated that 230,000 new accounts are registered every day. Through Myspace, Robinson has effectively combined the boxing world with an important part of today's pop culture, and through that connection, a seed has been planted that could grow with no end.On Robinson's friend list, you will see over 1,200 boxers, fans, writers, and management companies. Those with Robinson as a friend receive daily bulletins, or messages that she sends to all of her friends, that keep them up to date on the world of boxing, and the world of boxing on Myspace."I post daily updates of upcoming fights, post pictures from fights I attend, support the fighters when I can by attending their fights, interview fighters, post bulletins about the boxing world in general, maintain relationships with fans, and continually urge them to support the fighters," said Robinson. "It's all part of keeping them in contact with the sport".The work Robinson does is invaluable to boxing, as casual fans get information on the big news in the sport, and experts can get to know fighters who get little publicity."Bernadette is the Edward R. Morrow of boxing on Myspace", said Boxingscene.com writer Ryan Songalia. . "She labors tirelessly to give the fans and pundits all the latest news on boxers who frequent Myspace... " In addition, Robinson serves as a one woman portal to the entire boxing community on Myspace. She is happy to answer emails regarding fighters and managers who have accounts, and she never fails to post bulletins whenever a new fighter joins the website. Although she doesn't get paid for her efforts, Robinson feels as though her work is beneficial to the growth of the sport."I do my work because boxing is losing many fans, and a way to get the fans of the sport now to stay is keeping them personally involved in the sport. I believe Myspace offers fans the opportunities to get to know the fighters as people, and that in itself will make them want to be a part of the sport," she said.Although 1,200 people represent an extremely small portion of the boxing world, Robinson is just getting started on her quest. After editing her profile to strictly boxing this past February, Robinson has added friends weekly, and considering Myspace has over 106 million users, the boxing fans of the world simply need to find her before they become part the on-line clique. With so many people, the possibilities are endless: Imagine a world where every boxer, management company, writer, and fan are one step away from contacting each other. The sport would benefit so much, and as long as those involved in boxing continue to join (Robinson tells boxing personalities she meets to start an account), it could very well happen. Those who don..t think Myspace is an effective tool in saving boxing should look to those who are already involved in the popular site. Prominent boxers with Myspace accounts include (but aren..t limited to) Allan Green, Shannon Briggs, Lennox Lewis, Zab Judah, Edner Cherry, Kendall Holt, Dmitriy Salita, Chris Smith, Shaun George, Matt Godfrey, Rayco Saunders, Peter Quillin, Emmanuel Augustus, Ann Wolfe, Dominick Guinn, Jerson Ravelo, Sechew Powell, Brian Viloria, Maureen Shea, Alfonso Gomez, Nate Campbell, and Audley Harrison. Boxing writers include Doghouse Boxing..s Coyote Duran and Benny Henderson Jr., Boxingscene.com..s Ryan Songalia, and myself. There are also several management companies (mostly small) on Myspace, including Dibella Entertainment. All that use the site find it extremely useful in networking themselves and contacting others."I think the networking on Myspace is very beneficial to the sport because it allows fans to interact with people in the sport," said Songalia. "Fans, fighters, reporters, managers, and promoters all can discuss the sport and get the latest news on what is going down in the world of boxing, and knowledge is key to the survival of the sport".Through Bernadette Robinson, this boxing utopia is well on its way to being created. Boxing fans, sit back, relax, and smile, because ..The Boxing Queen of Myspace.. is on your team, and the sweet science is on its way up because of her work.------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------------------------ --- Questions or comments, e-mail Dan at: [email protected] Dan's archives at: www.myspace.com/danhorganboxing
