About Me

I was born in Merthyr Tydfil, during late December 1969, the son of a policeman and an Education Welfare Officer. I was brought up in Bridgend, a town famous for several Welsh rugby stars and model industrial re-generation. Always an avid music lover, and a devoted scratcher of my Dad's favourite records, I started playing the guitar just before my O levels. This, of course, was a recipe for near academic disaster.

In my late teens and early twenties, in between being a trainee Quantity Surveyor (very rock'n'roll) and completing a degree in Land Management at Leicester Poly (can you dig it?), I played in several Bridgend bands that churned out spiky mixtures of indie/rock covers and originals. Remember Mister Smiley's Horse at The Pier, Porthcawl? No? Good God, where were you on New Year's Eve 1992?!?

Career aspirations forced a move to Cambridge in 1995. There I met a girl from Saffron Walden, settled down, and sired three "bin lids". We all live together happily, just a few miles outside the city.

Since moving from Wales, and focussing on career and family, music-making has taken something of a back seat. However, last Christmas, my wife bought me an 8-track studio. Woooooooooo!!!! I haven't been so excited on Christmas Day since Mull of Kintyre was number one. I immediately dug out my old exercise book of angstful teenage ditties, and reviewed the contents. Once the shame and hysteria had worn off, I carefully selected the best songs for recording.

So, on this page you will find a handful of tracks that I penned up to 15 years ago, recently dusted off, and committed to hard disk. I hope you enjoy them while I think/worry about writing some more. This will be no mean feat after a ten year lay-off ...... but watch this (my)space.

Thanks for dropping by. While you're here, please don't hesitate ... as the MySpace hyperbole would have it .... to "show me some love". It would be great to hear from you.

My Interests

Music:

Band Members: Myself, that’s Julian Paul Lerway, and a Zoom MRS-802 CD
Julian Lerway: A Survey:
Survey date: Sunday, 21 January 2007
Hallo, Julian. Thanks for letting me trouble you on a Sunday. How are you today?: A little hung-over. Soapstar Superstar finished last week so I thought that I wouldn’t have to drink so heavily last night just to get through. But then Dancing on Ice started. Add Celebrity Big Brother to the mix and all of a sudden you’re fighting alcoholism.
What’s happening in your house at the moment?: My wife, Mel, is on the phone to her sister and the kids are demonstrating Brownian Motion in the living room.
OK whatever. What is your date of birth?: 22 December 1969
So that makes you a Sagittarius?: Not quite right … but we Capricorns don’t believe in all that bollocks anyway
Do you have a nickname?: I’m generally called Jules or variations thereof. That’s “Jewls” in Wales and “Julio” at work (in England).
You moved to England and married an English girl. Is St George your patron saint?: What a stupid question. Dewi Sant [Saint David]. Every time.
How tall are you?: 6 feet and 2 inches
What were your thoughts on waking up this morning?: Is it my turn for the lie-in? No? Bugger.
What was the last thing you stole?: A lie-in
Do you prefer beer or wine?: I like beer … and then a whine.
Mmmm. Clever. I like you what you did there. Coffee or tea?: Cofftea
Stop it! What made you put up a MySpace page at your age?: Grant Moon, an old friend and doppelganger, suggested it having heard a CD I sent him. An early mid-life crisis made me see it through …
Who and what are your influences?: In no particular order … Beatles, Beck, Blur, Kinks, BBC2 comedy, Dai Bowie, Pulp, Charlatans, Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Stone Roses, Happy Mondays, continental lagers, Ride, Radiohead, early Oasis, Divine Comedy, The Clangers, Wonderstuff, Mam and Dad, Roxy Music, Super Furry Animals, four or five Chess blues legends, tidy British ale, the present Mrs Lerway, UML and SSADM, Teenage Fanclub, Nirvana, Catch-22, Manics, Swap Shop, Gomez, the towns and villages along the River Ogmore, Stereophonics, P J Harvey, Smashing Pumpkins, The Who, Abi, Livvy, William
Bringing things a little more up to date … what’s in your CD player at the moment?: Oh dear. I just looked and it's “Angelina Ballerina Presents Classic Ballet Favourites”.
Oh dear indeed! What should be in there?: Beck’s new album, “The Information”. And I’d have got away with it if it wasn’t for those meddling kids. It’s a life-stage thing.
Who or what do you think your music sounds like?: A Business Analyst in need of new guitar strings.
What’s a business analyst?: Follow the link I just gave you!
Alright, alright. No-one likes a smart-arse. What’s your record label?: I am very much unsigned, my good man
So, you’re a guitar man. What’s your favourite guitar chord?: G minor 7 add 11
Are you being a smart-arse again?: No, no. It’s reputed to be the name of the chord George Harrison plays at the start of Hard Day’s Night. It’s fascinating because no-one is really sure of its exact shape. Least of all me.
Sticking with the guitar thing. Are you Fender or are you Gibson?: Gibson. I love a big fat humbucker.
Well there’s no need to be rude, dear. Do you play any other instruments?: Rudimentary bass, harmonica, keyboards, and recorder
Recorder?!! That’s a bit junior school, isn’t it?: Infants, actually. My five year old daughter has to fight me for her recorder on Tuesday mornings.
What would you do if your youngest said he wanted to give up 6th form to be a rock star?: Well that question’s a little premature – the little fellah isn’t even in nursery school yet. But I daresay I would drive his band’s van.
Do you read music?: Nope
So can you really consider yourself a musician?: Nope
Hit a nerve there, have I?: Nope
Do you believe in yourself?: In my advancing years I am getting there. But I’m still a little self conscious about my own songs.
You say in your bio that you will be writing some more tunes. How is that going?: It's hard work. So hard, in fact, that I might well blog my travails in this regard.
Well we’re out of time, Julian. That was very interesting … without actually being interesting at all.: Well, this is a survey on MySpace - what do you expect?
Hey! I ask the questions around here!: Cheerio then. I hope you're able to salvage something of statistical value.
