Biography: Without A Soul (W.A.S) an original Metal band formed in the fall of 2004 from Portage, Indiana. Brothers; vocalist, Roly Martinez Jr. (At the time only 13 years-old) and guitarist; Marty Pelayo (Also at the time, 13 years-old) moved to Portage, Indiana from Chicago, Illinois in the summer of 04’. Moving to the not so populated city of Portage, IN., from the fast paced, heavy populated city of Chicago, IL, both brothers wondered if anyone in Indiana was even into Heavy-Metal. Fortunately, they were very mistaken…
Feeling a bit unease the beginning of their 8th grade year, one day out of the ordinary, they met Robert Brys (Also at the time, 13 years-old) in school. Who not just happened to be a fellow 8th grader too, but was also drumming since he was in 6th grade. Each of them talked about their own perspectives of music and noticed that they had a lot in common. In result, they found themselves jamming out everyday after school in Marty and Roly’s backyard or in Rob’s grandmother’s garage. A couple of weeks later after jamming out together and getting a even stronger vibe from each others musical expressions, they decided to take things a step further. They wanted to form a band, but didn’t have a clue where to find a bassist, one who shared the same passion for a newly heavy committed band. One day riding the bus home from school, Rob bumped into Jake McCormick, a 12 year-old in 7th grade, who had happened to move to Portage, IN. from Michigan City, IN. that same summer (coincidently or fate?) . Out of conversation, exchanging what they were going to do after school, Rob discovered that Jake played bass (a love he discovered watching is uncle and grandfather play since he was a little child). Rob after many conversations with Jake about his perspectives of Metal, asked Jake if he wanted to jam out with Marty, Roly, and himself. He accepted and after a few weeks of jamming together, Jake was asked if he was interested in joining the band. After hearing this question, Jake said, “Hell Yeah!†The result of jamming out for those few weeks added more fluid to the fire. Just by hearing the sound of Roly’s crazy split-personality growls in his vocals; the fast, insane, and intense rhythm of the drums Rob gives; the brutal and dirty sound of the bass that Jake has; and the fast heavy and thrashy sound of the guitar Marty delivers, they knew at that specific moment, it was an instant click! Naming themselves Bloodline originally, they found themselves having/wanting to change the name after a few shows because they wanted to be unique, different, and eye catching. That’s when Without A Soul was born!
2 years later....W.A.S encountered their first big challenge having some personal problems with their bassist; Jake McCormick. Due to these problems W.A.S (Roly, Marty, & Rob) had made agreements with Jake to go their own separate ways. In a serious search for a new bassist they had encountered quite a challenge. During this process they had bumped into Tim Laskovich (former bassist of a local act; Cruel Irony). Tim was having some problems with Cruel Irony so he had decided to join Without A Soul. A couple of months bassist; Tim Laskovich fell through and then Without A Soul was "Without A Bassist" again....
In March of 2007, while in their 2nd deep search for a dedicated bassist they bumped into Jon Klaves (an 18 year old from Hickory Hills, IL) and things just went on incredibly great from there on. Completing W.A.S as a 4 piece band they are really working hard to come back even stronger and heavier than before. As of right now they are currently working on a new look, new music, new merchandising, and expanding their show schedule as well. Playing over 300 shows within the past 2 1/2 years and monthly residencies in some underground Metal clubs in Illinois & Indiana, Without A Soul is determined to make their mark in this thriving and demanding world of Metal, building a scene and a following of their own.
