The Unique James Blunt
Biography
James Blunt is a new singer on the charts. In 2005, he became well known for his number one hit “You’re Beautiful†off his debut album Back to Bedlam. He is a 32 year old man with almost no music back ground in his life or family. Growing up in Tidworth, Wiltshire, England his family only sang songs like Happy Birthday. The musical style he conveys in his music is a mix of pop, rock, folk and adult contemporary. His music has a wide array of instruments from vocals and piano to the marimba and mellotron.
James Blunt was born in a military hospital and grew up with a family that was all about the military. He was sent off to boarding school at seven where he was interested in science and math. He then obtained a pilots license at 16, needless to say there was very little music influence in his early years. He became interested in the guitar at 14 and played Nirvana’s “Nevermindâ€. However, with such a strong military background, James joined the British army with much persuading from his father.
James was sent to Kosovo where one of his songs “No Bravery†was written. Music was his mind keeper. He was sent out as a peacekeeper after a civil war and relied on music to “take him awayâ€. He left the army in 2002 to focus on his music career. After only a couple of months his music was recognized and instantly landed him management and publishing deals. He signed with Linda Perry at Custard Records.
His musical influences are a small list of popular artists since music was considered “noise†in his house growing up. Queen, Dire Straits and Nirvana are some of Blunts younger impressionists. After producing his album however, many critics compare his music to other British artists, such as Elton John, Beck and Elliot Smith.
He recorded his album in 2003 and off it in 2004-2006, 4 songs became top 100 hits across the world. All of the songs are classified as having universal appeal and all are conveyed with his unique voice. He has received a few awards since the start of his music career just a few years ago (MTV Awards- Best Male Video, Best Cinematography along with other international awards). It was put correctly when one said “He has, it can be said without exaggeration, lived a life that should provide enough material for a dozen albums, with sufficient left over for a couple of screenplays.†This is just the beginning of Blunt’s music career. He still has many years of influential music to make for us all to enjoy.
