Influences: I started paying attention to music at a young age, everything from Cyndi Lauper to Def Leppard to Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, the Jacksons, and the Cure. . . . yeah, that's quite a variety, isn't it? In contemplating my influences, I began a list of all the creative people who have influenced me over the years, which has not been finished yet, as I discover new wonders like Over the Rhine, Patty Griffin, Sonya Kitchell, Mary Gauthier, Joseph Arthur, Tyrone Cotton, and unearth old ones like Sara Vaughn. I'll try to include it in an upcoming blog . . . It wasn't until my mid-20's that I felt compelled to study guitar, and began writing and singing my own songs, although I had written other things all my life. In fact, I didn't discover my voice until that time, and it felt strange at first to sing. My debut performance on a stage was at our wedding reception with the song Eddy, written as a gift to my husband, Mark. (I'll let you figure that one out.) We both grew up close to Akron, Ohio, near the Cuyahoga Valley, catching every whiff of horses that we could and craving a life that was much more rural. Following this dream of country life, we moved to Kentucky in 2003. It was here that I found the Heartland Songwriters' Association of Kentucky, which led me further into songwriting and performing. Since then it has been a whirlwind of growth, and one of the most challenging journeys that I've undertaken. This summer my focus has been on recording songs as organically as possible, so I'm strumming away in a happy room at home with my Audio-Technica recording mic, which I love, and playing with software- Adobe Audition, trying to capture the life born in a song. This is much harder than it sounds, and it might not be the best option, but I am learning, and enjoying it. This past August we held a concert/live recording in our back yard in which some of my talented and dearest friends performed. It was at times sweaty, at times magic. Hopefully the latter will shine through on the recording- I hope to have pictures and the songs available soon.Below: Trail of Crumbs performed live at the Cecilia Days Festival.....
