What can I say?......Jesus changed my life and gives me the opportunity to share that through music....it's my passion and I love to sing, write, worship.....I don't want to be a musician for the sake of playing music, I always want the message to be the reason I play......I long to write relevant, inspired songs that will touch people's lives and please my saviour......I have the most amazing fiancee in the world!...she loves Jesus with all her heart and, for some reason, loves me too :-)...God has blessed me far beyond what I deserve by putting her in my life, and I love her....I have been blessed with amazing family and friends who find it harder and harder to put up with me.......I struggle to remember that wisdom exists where it is not presumed.......I have a black lab named Reagan.....I also have a 60 gallon saltwater aquarium that is my own personal reminder of the beauty of this creation.......I think tomatoes are slimy and gross........God loves me even though I don't like the tomatoes He made......
Bio:
Few things move us like a good song. Catchy choruses and meaningful lyrics touch our soul like few things can. No one understands this better than singer/songwriter Tommy Byers. He has dedicated the music in his heart to spreading a message of hope and encouragement. Tommy pushes himself to write transparent lyrics that will convince the listener the song was written for them.
But, he didn’t always know his life was headed in this direction. As he tells it, “I wanted to be a professional athlete growing up. I think God obviously had other plans,†he says with a grin.
In mid-2004, while studying computer science and Spanish at the University of Central Oklahoma, Tommy realized that music was something that he wanted to devote his most concerted efforts to. He explains, “I remember walking on campus one day and just realizing that I could minor in music. I had been leading worship at a small bible study for about a year and a half. Looking back, I realize things were happening that pushed me in that direction.†And so, Tommy began the journey, honing his craft and writing music that would please his Saviour and bring encouragement to anyone who would listen.
Throughout the last four years, the thing that began as an informal part of his life became his most important mission. “I’ve played everywhere from a cattle auction to a church of a thousand to an orphanage in Haiti, “ he remembers fondly. It was in Haiti in October of 2007 that Tommy realized the impact music had on the world. “In Haiti, we visited several orphanages and, without an exception, the children completely lit up when we began to sing with them.†There were also opportunities for him to use the call God had placed in his heart. “Being able to lead our team and the Haitian people in worship, in the middle of a poverty-stricken and hopeless village, was something I can’t begin to describe,†he says with a certain glow. “I’ve never felt like God had used me for His purpose more than at that moment.â€
So, where does Tommy see himself now?
“I don’t want to be famous, I want God to be famous. That sounds cliché but it’s how I truly feel,†he says. “I just want to be able to dedicate my entire life to ministering through music in whatever capacity God would have me do.†His ministry is young but Tommy possesses faith in a divine plan. “As long as we keep our focus on Him, the things that are supposed to happen will happen.â€
And that brings us to where we are today. A handful of songs, one voice, and a strong desire to meet people where they are.
